4 Disliked Acts in Prayer According to Authentic Hadith

① Placing Hands on the Hips During Prayer

The Prophet ﷺ forbade placing the hands on the hips while praying.
(Bukhārī, al-‘Amal fī al-Ṣalāh, Bāb al-Khaṣr fī al-Ṣalāh, 1220; Muslim, al-Masājid, Bāb Karāhah al-Ikhtiṣār fī al-Ṣalāh, 545)

② Yawning in Prayer

The Prophet ﷺ said:

"When one of you yawns during prayer, let him suppress it as much as possible, for Shayṭān enters through it."
(Muslim, al-Zuhd, Bāb Tashmīt al-‘Āṭis wa Karāhah al-Tathāʾub, 2995)

He also said:

"(When yawning) do not say ‘Hā, Hā,’ for Shayṭān laughs at that."
(Bukhārī, Badʾ al-Khalq, Bāb Ṣifat Iblīs wa Junūdihi, 3289)

③ Joining Sunnah Immediately After Farḍ Without Pause

The Prophet ﷺ said:

"Do not connect one prayer with another; speak in between them or change your place."
(Muslim, al-Jumu‘ah, Bāb al-Ṣalāh ba‘d al-Jumu‘ah, 388)

  • ‘Umar رضي الله عنه said this was the reason the People of the Book were ruined — they did not separate their prayers.
  • Al-Mughīrah ibn Shuʿbah رضي الله عنه narrated that the Prophet ﷺ said the imām should not pray voluntary prayers in the same spot as the obligatory prayer but should move slightly.
    (Abu Dāwūd, al-Ṣalāh, 616)

④ Speaking in Prayer

Zayd ibn Arqam رضي الله عنه said:

"We used to speak in prayer until the verse ḥāfiẓū ‘ala al-ṣalawāt was revealed, then we were commanded to remain silent."
(Bukhārī, al-‘Amal fī al-Ṣalāh, 1200; Muslim, 539)

  • The incident of Muʿāwiyah ibn Ḥakam al-Sulamī رضي الله عنه shows that talking in prayer was prohibited, and in case of ignorance, the Prophet ﷺ corrected gently without invalidating the prayer.
    (Muslim, al-Masājid, Bāb Taḥrīm al-Kalām fī al-Ṣalāh, 537)
