3 Important Rulings of Eid al-Fitr from Qur’an and Sunnah

1. Performing Ghusl on Eid al-Fitr

Practice of ‘Ali (RA):

"Ghusl should be done on the days of Jumu‘ah, ‘Arafah, Eid al-Adha, and Eid al-Fitr."
(al-Sunan al-Kubra al-Bayhaqi 3/277)

Practice of Ibn ‘Umar (RA):
He would perform ghusl before going to the Eid prayer.
(Muwatta’ Malik 1/177)

Explanation by Imam al-Nawawi (رحمه الله):
He said this practice is based on Ibn ‘Umar’s action and is by analogy with the ghusl of Jumu‘ah.

2. Giving Sadaqat al-Fitr Before the Prayer

Command of the Prophet ﷺ:

"Give Sadaqat al-Fitr before going out to the Eid prayer."
(Bukhari 1503; Muslim 984)

Note:
It is obligatory to give it before leaving for the prayer. Giving it after reaching the Eid ground is not correct.

3. Performing Eid Prayer in the Eid Ground

Sunnah of the Prophet ﷺ:
Abu Sa‘id al-Khudri (RA) said:

"The Prophet ﷺ would go out to the Eid ground on Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha."
(Bukhari 956; Muslim 889)

Location of the Eid Ground:
The Eid ground of the Prophet ﷺ was about 1000 cubits from Masjid al-Nabawi, toward the direction of al-Baqi‘.
