28 Great Virtues and Blessings of Friday in the Light of Authentic Ahadith

This excerpt is taken from the book Tuhfa Jummah by Sheikh-ul-Hadith Maulana Muhammad Yusuf (Founder of Darul Hadith Jamia Kamalia).

Virtues of Yawm al-Jumu'ah (Friday)

Names of Yawm al-Jumu'ah:

كثرة المياني تدل على كثرة المعاني
The abundance of words indicates the abundance of purposes:
The more names something has, the greater its honor and grandeur. The day of Jumu'ah holds great importance in Islam and is a combination of countless virtues and blessings. One of its distinguishing honors is that it has multiple descriptive names, and each name indicates its honor. Among the days of the week, only Jumu'ah has this distinction; the other days of the week do not have as many names as Jumu'ah.

The names of Yawm al-Jumu'ah are as follows:

① In the era of ignorance, this day was called "Urooba."
② As'ad bin Zararah and his companions named it Jumu'ah Mubarak due to the gathering of Muslims, which is supported by evidence from the Quran and Sunnah, and its permanent name became Jumu'ah.
③ In various Prophetic hadiths, it is also called Yawm al-Eid.
④ It is also called Yawm al-Ziyadah.
⑤ Yawm al-Bisharah is also established from hadith.
⑥ Yawm al-Maghfirah is also mentioned.
⑦ It is also called Yawm al-Hatiq.
⑧ Yawm al-Shahid is also established.
⑨ Yawm al-Mashhood is also mentioned.
⑩ Yawm al-Azhar is also found in hadith.
⑪ Yawm al-Mazid is also present in hadith books.
⑫ It is also called Sayyid al-Ayyam.
⑬ Fadl al-Ayyam is also mentioned.
⑭ Salamah al-Ayyam is also mentioned.
⑮ And it is also Yawm al-Hisab (Day of Reckoning).

Reason for the naming of Jumu'ah:

Friday is called Jummah because on this day many great events occurred, for example:
① On this day, soil was collected from every region of the earth, from which the clay of the father of mankind, our master Hazrat Adam (peace be upon him), was made.
② On this day, the blowing of the trumpet and the striking (of the trumpet) will occur.
③ This is the day on which the trumpet of resurrection will be blown (i.e., the revival will happen).
④ On this day, the resurrection will take place.
⑤ It was on Jummah that our master Hazrat Adam (peace be upon him) was sent down to the earth.
⑥ The father of mankind, Hazrat Adam (peace be upon him), passed away from this transient world on this day.
⑦ The Day of Judgment will also be established on this Jummah.
⑧ Jummah is the day on which the Divine Court will be established.
⑨ This is the blessed day on which the gathering of the people of Paradise will take place in Paradise.
⑩ This is the blessed day when the Creator of the universe will grant the people of Paradise His vision.
For this reason, it would have been more appropriate to name this blessed day Jummah al-Mubarak (Blessed Friday).
One reason for naming Jummah as such is that the first person in Arabia to name this day Jummah was an elder named Ka'b bin Lu'ayy. The Quraysh of Mecca used to gather on this day, and Ka'b bin Lu'ayy would deliver sermons. This event occurred approximately five hundred and sixty years before the Prophethood of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him). Ka'b bin Lu'ayy is among the ancestors of the Prophet (peace be upon him). Allah Almighty protected him from idolatry even during the era of ignorance and granted him the ability to believe in the Oneness of God. He also conveyed the glad tidings of the coming of the Noble Prophet (peace be upon him) to the people. His status among the Quraysh was such that when he passed away, which was about five hundred and sixty years before the Prophethood of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him), the Arabs began to count their history from his death. Initially, the history of the Arabs was counted from the construction of the Ka'bah. After the death of Ka'b bin Lu'ayy, history was counted from that event. Then, when the event of the Elephant occurred in the year of the birth of the Prophet (peace be upon him), the Arabs began to count their history from that event.
In summary, the institution of Jummah was established in Arabia before Islam during the time of Ka'b bin Lu'ayy, but the special status of Jummah was granted later to this Ummah.

Virtues of Jumu'ah (Friday):

Books of Hadith are filled with the virtues of Jumu'ah. Every Hadith book has a dedicated chapter on Friday. For the interest of esteemed readers, please observe a few Hadiths to refresh your faith and gain spiritual insights.

Hadith Number 1: Special Favor of Jumu'ah on the Ummah of Islam

"It is narrated from our master Hazrat Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Imam of the universe (peace be upon him) said: We are the last Ummah to come, but on the Day of Judgment, we will be ahead of all other Ummah because the Book was first given to those people and we were given the Book after them. Then this Friday was made obligatory upon them, but they differed regarding it, and Allah guided us about it, and all people will be behind us in this matter; the Jews will be tomorrow and the Christians the day after tomorrow."
Reference: (Sahih Bukhari Hadith Number: 876 Darussalam, Sahih Muslim Hadith Number: 99, 855 Darussalam, Sunan Nasai Hadith Number: 1376, Mishkat al-Masabih: 1354)

Hadith Number 2: Reward of One Year’s Fasting and Tahajjud for Every Step Taken in Attending Jumu'ah

Narrated by Sayyiduna Hazrat Aws bin Aws رضي الله عنه: Imam Azam صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم said: Whoever bathes someone on the day of Jumu'ah and also bathes himself, comes early for Jumu'ah, participates in the beginning of the sermon, comes on foot and does not come riding, listens to the sermon near the Imam, and refrains from idle talk, then for every step he takes, the reward of fasting for one year and standing in prayer at night is recorded for him.
Reference: (Abu Dawood: 345, Jami' Tirmidhi: 496, Sunan Nasai: 1384, Ibn Majah: 1087)

Ruling of the Hadith:

This hadith is of Hasan grade and its chains of narration are authentic.

Narrator of the Hadith:

Sayyiduna Aws bin Aws رضي الله عنه is Sayyiduna Hazrat Aws bin Aws رضي الله عنه Al-Thaqafi, the father of Umrah bin Aws. He narrated from the Prophet صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم through Abu Al-Ash'ath Sam'ani and his son Umrah and others.

Hadith Number 3: Forgiveness of sins for ten days by attending one Jumu'ah

Narrated by Sayyiduna Hazrat Abu Huraira Abdul Rahman bin Sakhr (may Allah be pleased with him), the Prophet of Madinah (peace be upon him) said: Whoever performs ghusl (ritual bath) and comes to attend Jumu'ah (Friday prayer), and then offers as many nawafil (voluntary prayers) as are destined for him, then remains silent until the khutbah (sermon) is finished, and then prays Jumu'ah prayer with the Imam, the sins committed between this Jumu'ah and the next Jumu'ah will be forgiven, and in fact, sins of three additional days will also be forgiven.
Reference: (Sahih Muslim: 26-857)

Important Note: The addition of three days is because every good deed is rewarded tenfold, so the period until the next Jumu'ah is seven days, and three more days are added to complete a full ten-day period.

Hadith Number 4: Registration in the Special List and the Reward of Sacrifice

"It is narrated from our master Hazrat Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Mercy (peace be upon him) said: When the blessed Friday comes, angels stand at the door of the mosque and write down the names of everyone who comes. The one who comes early and first is like one who has sacrificed a camel, then the one who comes after is like one who has sacrificed a cow, then a calf, then a chicken, then an egg. When the Imam comes for the sermon, the angels close their registers and join to listen to the sermon."
Reference: (Sahih Bukhari: 929, Sahih Muslim: 24-840, Abu Dawood: 351, Jami` at-Tirmidhi: 499, Sunan an-Nasa'i: 1385, Sunan Ibn Majah: 102)

Benefit:

This Hadith of the Prophet ﷺ makes it absolutely clear that when the Imam comes to the mosque for the sermon and sits on the pulpit, those who come afterward do not receive the virtues of sacrifice; only the obligatory act is fulfilled.
The Creator of the universe has created eighteen times more angels than all creatures. This number is mentioned in the book Al-Mala'ikah, which is in the margin of Abu Dawood. The angels who record the reward of Jumu'ah are present, and they only record the reward of Jumu'ah; different angels record the rewards of other deeds.
When the Imam leaves home to deliver the sermon, those specific angels close their special registers and attend to listen to the Imam's sermon. Those who come to the mosque after the Imam has sat on the pulpit miss out on this great reward; only their obligatory duty is fulfilled. They are deprived of further virtues and rewards. How regrettable it is that for the sake of the world, you have suffered such a loss in the Hereafter, being deprived of the sacrifice of a camel, which nowadays costs about fifty thousand rupees, meaning you missed out on a sacrifice worth fifty thousand rupees.
Respectfully, it is requested from the preachers that the Friday sermon be kept shorter compared to other sermons.
The Master of the universe ﷺ said:
إن طول صلاة الرجل وقصر خطبته مئنة من فقهه
A long prayer and a short sermon is a sign of the preacher’s understanding of jurisprudence.
Reference: (Narrated by Muslim: 47, 829)

The completion of Islam took place on the day of Jumu'ah.

Hadith Number 5: The Reason for the Superiority of Friday

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Hazrat Hudhaifa (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: Allah Almighty deprived the previous peoples of Friday, so for the Jews, the day was Saturday, and for the Christians, it was Sunday. Then Allah Almighty brought us and guided us towards the day of Friday, and He arranged the days in such a way that first comes Friday, then Saturday, and after that Sunday, and likewise, on the Day of Judgment, they will be behind us. We came into the world last, but on the Day of Judgment, we will be first, and among all nations, our judgment will be first.
Reference: (Narrated by Muslim: 856)

The distinction and honor of Jumu'ah (Friday) being granted is exclusive to this Ummah. Correspondingly, the completion of the religion of Islam also occurred on this day.
This command of Allah Almighty was revealed on the Day of Arafah in the 9th year of Hijrah, on a Friday.
Reference: (Surah Al-Ma'idah: 3)

The completion of the religion means that today all the rulings, etiquettes, limits, and obligations of the religion have been completed; there is neither the possibility of reduction nor the need for addition. This is why after the revelation of this noble verse, no new Islamic ruling was revealed. The few verses revealed afterward consist of encouragement and warning or emphasize the rulings that had already been revealed.

Sayyiduna Hazrat Hudhaifa

Sayyiduna Hudhaifa bin Yamaan رضي الله عنه's kunya is Abu Abdur Rahman. His father was Haseel; both father and son embraced Islam together. He participated in all the battles except Badr. He set out to participate in the Battle of Badr but was caught by the Quraysh and missed the battle, which remained a regret for his entire life. The Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وسلم said about him: "Hudhaifa, you have the right to call yourself either a Muhajir or an Ansari." Sayyiduna Hudhaifa رضي الله عنه preferred to be called an Ansari. He is the companion of the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم who was given the title "Sahib Sirr Rasulullah" (The Keeper of the Prophet's Secret). The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم appointed him as the governor in Madain. He passed away 40 days after the martyrdom of Uthman رضي الله عنه, in the year 36 Hijri during the caliphate of Ali رضي الله عنه. Sayyiduna Hudhaifa رضي الله عنه is a narrator of hadith; 12 of his hadiths are agreed upon, Imam Bukhari uniquely narrates 6 hadiths from him, and Imam Muslim uniquely narrates 7 hadiths from him.

Hadith Number 6: The Day of Friday, the Master of Days and the Best of Days

"Imam al-Muhaddithin Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah رضي الله عنه narrates that the Compassionate, Merciful, the Mercy to the Worlds ﷺ said: The best day on which the sun has risen is Friday. On this day, Prophet Adam عليه السلام was created, and on this day he was admitted to Paradise, and on this day he was expelled from Paradise, and the Day of Judgment will also be established on Friday."
Reference: (Narrated by Muslim: 854, Jami` at-Tirmidhi: 488)

It is narrated from Hazrat Hasan that
Reference: (Al-Mu'jam al-Kabir by al-Tabarani, vol. 6, page 361, hadith no. 6773, Majma' az-Zawa'id vol. 7 hadith no. 10966)

It was revealed on the day of Arafah, 9th Dhu al-Hijjah, at which time the Imam of the Universe was present in the field of Arafat on Friday.

Hadith Number 8: Friday is the Day of Completion of Religion

In twelve hadiths narrated by Sayyiduna Hazrat Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them), this story is mentioned. That
"Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) recited this noble verse one day اليوم أكملت..... الخ. A Jew was sitting with Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him), and he said that if this verse had been revealed to us, we would have considered it (that day) as Eid. Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) replied that this verse was revealed on two Eid days: Friday and the day of Arafah."
Reference: (Narrated by Tirmidhi)

Hadith Number 9: Friday is an Eid Day

And it is narrated in Sahih Bukhari from Tariq bin Shahab, may Allah be pleased with him:
قال رجل من اليهود لعمر يا أمير المؤمنين لو أن علينا نزلت هذه الآية اليوم أكملت..... الخ لاتخذنا ذلك اليوم عيدا فقال عمر إني لأعلم أى يوم نزلت هذه الآية نزلت يوم عرفة فى يوم الجمعة
A Jew said to Sayyiduna Hazrat Umar, may Allah be pleased with him: O Commander of the Faithful, if this noble verse had been revealed to us, we would have considered it the day of Eid. In response, the second Caliph Sayyiduna Umar bin Khattab, may Allah be pleased with him, said: I know on which day this verse was revealed. This noble verse was revealed on the day of Arafah, which was a Friday. From the narrations of Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas and Sayyiduna Umar, may Allah be pleased with both, it is established that Friday is considered an Eid.
Reference: (Sahih Bukhari: 6726)

Benefit:

Great events occurred on Friday and some will occur in the future, whether or not they have any special virtue. Their mention is made so that we remain always prepared for righteous deeds and to attain Allah’s mercy.

Hadith Number 10: Friday is superior even to Eid

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Lubabah bin Mundhir رضي الله عنه that the Mercy to the Worlds ﷺ said: The day of Friday is the leader of all days and is the most honored in the sight of Allah Almighty. And it is more revered by Allah than Eid al-Adha and Eid al-Fitr. It has five special characteristics: ① On this day, Allah Almighty created Adam عليه السلام ② On this same day, Sayyiduna Adam عليه السلام was sent down to the earth ③ On this same day, Allah Almighty caused Adam عليه السلام to pass away ④ And on this same day, there is a blessed hour in which if a person asks Allah Almighty for any good, Allah necessarily accepts it, provided that the request is not for something unlawful ⑤ And on this same day, the Day of Resurrection will be established; no close angel, nor the heavens and the earth, winds, mountains, and seas, but they all tremble on Friday (at the time of the Resurrection).
Reference: (Narrated by Ibn Majah: 1084)

Benefit:

This greatness and virtue is because Friday is exclusively for worship, whereas on the two Eids, along with worship, there are also games, celebrations, and special arrangements for food and drink.

Our Master Hazrat Lubabah bin Mundhir (may Allah be pleased with him):

Our Master Lubabah (may Allah be pleased with him) was named Rifaat. His father's name was Abdul Mundhir, and he belonged to the tribe of Aws. (He was also the Naqeeb of the Prophet, present at the Pledge of Aqabah, the Battle of Badr, and other subsequent battles. He passed away during the caliphate of Hazrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with him). Narrations from him have been transmitted by Hazrat Nafi and Hazrat Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them), among others.)

Hadith Number 11: Friday is a Day of Eid and a Day of Purification

"Our master Hazrat Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: Indeed, this is the day of Eid which Allah has made exclusively for the people of Islam. Therefore, whoever comes for the Friday prayer should perform Ghusl (ritual purification) and if there is perfume available, he should definitely apply it, and it is obligatory upon you to use the Miswak (tooth-stick)."
Reference: (Ibn Majah: 1098, authenticated by Al-Albani)

Hadith Number 12: Friday, a Special Gift of Goodness and Blessing

"The servant of the Messenger of Allah, our master Anas, may Allah be pleased with him, said that the Noble Messenger, peace be upon him, was presented with Friday by Jibreel, peace be upon him, who brought in his hand a white glass-like object with a black dot in the middle. The Prophet, peace be upon him, asked Jibreel, 'What is this?' Jibreel replied, 'This is the blessed Friday which your Lord has granted to you so that it may be a festival for you and your Ummah, and there is goodness for you in it.'"
Reference: (Al-Targhib wa al-Tarhib, p. 489, vol. 1)

Hadith Number 13: The Status and Rank of Those Who Perform Friday Prayer on the Day of Resurrection

"Sayyiduna Hazrat Abu Musa Ash'ari رضي الله عنه states that the Messenger of Allah صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم said: All days will be brought forth (on the Day of Judgment), while Friday will be brought in a golden, shining form. Those who observe Friday will be wrapped around it as a bride is brought to her palanquin. Friday will provide light for them to walk by; their color will be as white as snow, and their fragrance will be like musk. They will enter the mountain of camphor. Jinn and humans will keep looking at them without blinking, and they will enter Paradise. Except for those who call the Adhan for the sake of reward, no one else will be included with them."
Reference: (Al-Mutahayyir Al-Rabih fi Thawab al-Amal al-Salih, Vol. 1, Hadith 418)

Abu Musa Al-Ash'ari

"Sayyiduna Abu Musa's name is Abdullah and his father's name is Qais. He accepted Islam after coming to Mecca. He migrated towards Abyssinia, came to Medina Munawwarah in the year of Khyber with the companions of the ship. In the year 20 Hijri, Sayyiduna Umar رضي الله عنه appointed him as the governor of Basra, and he remained governor in Kufa until the early period of the Umayyad Caliphate. Later, he moved to Kufa. He remained the governor of Kufa until the martyrdom of Uthman رضي الله عنه. He passed away in the year 50 Hijri."

Sayyiduna Abu Musa رضي الله عنه's 760 hadiths adorn the books of hadith, among which 50 are agreed upon (Muttafaqun Alayh). Imam Bukhari is unique in 4 hadiths, and Imam Muslim is unique in 25 hadiths.

Hadith Number 14: Going to Friday prayer by walking is like the act of Jihad

Sayyiduna Hazrat Ubaya bin Rafi'ah narrates that I was going for Friday prayer when I met Abu Ubaas (may Allah be pleased with him) on the way. He said that I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) say: "Whoever's both feet get dusty in the path of Allah, Allah will forbid the Hellfire for them."
Reference: (Sahih Bukhari Hadith No. 907, Dar Islam)

Hadith No. 15: Friday as a Means of Atonement for Sins

Sayyiduna Abi Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates from the Prophet of Mercy (peace be upon him) that the five daily prayers from one Friday to the next Friday, and from one Ramadan to the next Ramadan, serve as atonement for sins if major sins are avoided. And in another narration:
"Friday serves as atonement for the interval between the first Friday and the second Friday, plus an additional three days (i.e., atonement for eleven days)." The Master of the Universe says: Whoever does a good deed, it is like ten good deeds.
Reference: (Sahih al-Targhib wa al-Tarhib Hadith No. 684, Matba' al-Ma'arif Riyadh)

Hadith No. 16: Friday as a Cause for Entry into Paradise

"Sayyiduna Abi Saeed (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that he heard the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) say: Whoever does five deeds in one day, Allah will record him among the people of Paradise."
① He visited the sick.
② And attended a funeral.
③ He fasted.
④ He walked to Friday prayer.
⑤ And freed a captive.

"Sayyiduna Samurah (may Allah be pleased with him) says that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: Attend Friday prayer and sit close to the Imam; indeed, such a person will be among the people of Paradise. And whoever is late for Friday prayer will also be late in Paradise."
Reference: (Sahih al-Targhib wa al-Tarhib: 713)

Sayyiduna Samurah (may Allah be pleased with him):

Sayyiduna Samrah bin Jundub Al-Fazari, may Allah be pleased with him, was an adversary of the Ansari tribe. He passed away in Basra during the caliphate of Amir Muawiya, may Allah be pleased with him, in the year 58 AH.
He is the narrator of 123 hadiths, among which two hadiths are agreed upon by both Imams, two hadiths are unique to Imam Bukhari, and four hadiths are unique to Imam Muslim.

Hadith Number 18: The Virtue of Reciting Surah Al-Kahf on Friday Night or Day

Narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Saeed Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him), the Compassionate, the Merciful, the Leader of the Universe, the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: "Whoever recites Surah Al-Kahf on the day of Friday, light will shine for him from one Friday to the next."

In one narration, it is reported as Mauquf from Hazrat Abu Saeed:
وفي رواية من قرأ سورة الكهف ليلة الجمعة أضاء له من النور ما بينه وبين البيت العتيق
"Whoever recites Surah Al-Kahf on the night of Friday, light will be granted to him up to Bayt Al-Atiq."
Reference: (Musnad Darimi with reference to the mentioned Sahih Al-Targhib wal-Tarhib)

It is also reported that whoever recites Surah Al-Kahf on the day of Friday, his sins are forgiven from one Friday to the next and for an additional three days, and he is granted light that reaches the heavens. He is also protected from the trial of the Dajjal.

Regarding other Surahs on Friday besides Surah Al-Kahf, the narrations are weak.
Reference: (See: Da'eef Al-Targhib, Al-Albani Vol. 1 pp. 232, 233 and Allah knows best)

Hadith Number 25: The reward of attending Friday prayer is like sacrifice

Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: Whoever performs the ghusl (ritual bath) of janabah (major impurity) on the day of Jumu'ah and then goes to the mosque for the Jumu'ah prayer, it is as if he has sacrificed a camel. And whoever goes in the second hour, it is as if he has sacrificed a cow. And whoever arrives in the third hour, it is as if he has sacrificed a horned ram. And whoever goes in the fourth hour, it is as if he has sacrificed a chicken. And whoever goes in the fifth hour, it is as if he has given a mere egg in charity. Then, when the Imam proceeds to the pulpit, the angels present in the mosque listen to the dhikr (sermon).

Benefit:

One should compete with each other in doing good deeds; therefore, we should also make every effort to reach the mosque early on Friday to earn the reward of the camel sacrifice so that we can receive prayers from the angels.
In short: What less is the first virtue of Jumu'ah! Allah Almighty has revealed an entire Surah in the Holy Quran named "Surah Al-Jumu'ah," which is part of the twenty-eighth Juz. This indicates the greatness and status of this day.

Hadith Number 26: Those who pray Jumu'ah at the earliest time will be on the hills of musk

Regarding the visitation of Allah Almighty in Paradise on the day of Jumu'ah, Imam Ajuri, may Allah have mercy on him, narrated this hadith from Hazrat Ibn Abbas, may Allah be pleased with them both, from the Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him.
The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, said:
إن أهل الجنة يرون ربهم تعالى فى كل يوم الجمعة فى رمال الكافور وأقربهم منه مجلسا أسرعهم إليه يوم الجمعة وأبكرهم غدوا
"The people of Paradise will visit their Lord, the Blessed and Exalted, on the hill of camphor every Friday, and among them, those who will sit closest to Allah Almighty are those who hastened for Jumu'ah on Friday and arrived early in the morning for Jumu'ah."

Hadith Number 27: The Divine Visitation in Paradise on the Day of Jumu'ah

Allah Almighty's statement (ولدينا مزيد) meaning "with Us is more" refers to blessings that a person cannot even imagine or conceive. This implies that every Friday, the blessing of seeing Allah Almighty will be granted. And the vision of Allah Almighty is greater than all other blessings.

Hadith Number 28: Presentation of Deeds on the Day of Jumu'ah

In the narration of Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah رضي الله عنه, these words are also reported.
"On Thursday and Friday, deeds are presented, and every such believing servant who does not associate partners with Allah is forgiven, except for two (quarreling) men; their forgiveness is not granted. Allah Almighty says about them: Let them remain until they reconcile."
