❖ Clarification on the Ruling of Āmīn bil-Jahr (Saying Āmīn Aloud)
Questioner: Ḥājī Naẓīr Khān, Dāmān Hazro
❀ Question:
When Deobandi scholars are asked about the practice of saying Āmīn aloud (Āmīn bil-Jahr), they respond by saying:
“It was instructed so that it could be known who is still praying, as people would rush away after Salah.”
Is this explanation correct?
✔ Answer:
Al-ḥamdu lillāh, waṣ-ṣalātu was-salāmu ʿalā Rasūlillāh, Ammā baʿd!
The explanation given by some Deobandi scholars that “Āmīn was said aloud so people could know who is still in prayer due to the habit of leaving quickly” is completely baseless and fabricated.
In reality, Āmīn bil-Jahr — meaning to say Āmīn aloud after Surah al-Fātiḥah — is authentically established from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.
✿ Authentic Prophetic Evidences (Dalā’il Ḥadīthiyyah):
➊ Ḥadīth of Wā’il ibn Ḥujr (رضي الله عنه):
Sayyidunā Wā’il ibn Ḥujr (رضي الله عنه) narrated:
"فَجَهَرَ بِآمِينَ"
“Then he (ﷺ) said Āmīn aloud.”
➋ Practice of ʿAbdullāh ibn al-Zubayr (رضي الله عنه):
Sayyidunā ʿAbdullāh ibn al-Zubayr (رضي الله عنه) and those praying behind him would say Āmīn so loudly that the sound of Āmīn would echo throughout the mosque.
This detail is recorded in:
❖ Conduct of the Companions:
The noble Companions (رضوان الله عليهم أجمعين) were not people who would rush out of prayer, nor did they need Āmīn to indicate who remained in Salah.
This explanation is completely unfounded and contrary to the actual historical reality.

Summary:
❶ Saying Āmīn aloud is proven from authentic narrations of the Prophet ﷺ.
❷ The practice of the Companions also confirms this Sunnah.
❸ The claim that it was to identify those still in prayer is fabricated and unsubstantiated.
