Who are the people with whom Allah will not speak on the Day of Judgment?
What are their traits, so that we may avoid them and not be deprived of Allah's mercy and speech?
(Your brother: Dr. Saʿdāt)
Alḥamdulillāh, waṣ-ṣalātu was-salāmu ʿalā Rasūlillāh, ʿammā baʿd!
Wa lā ḥawla wa lā quwwata illā billāh.
The Noble Prophet ﷺ explicitly described certain individuals with whom Allah will not speak on the Day of Judgment, nor will He look at them, purify them, or grant them mercy. Instead, for them is a painful punishment.
The following is a compilation of authentic narrations from the Prophet ﷺ:
Narrated by Abū Dharr رضي الله عنه, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“There are three types of people with whom Allah will not speak on the Day of Judgment, nor will He look at them, nor purify them, and for them is a painful punishment.”
The Prophet ﷺ repeated this statement three times.
Abū Dharr رضي الله عنه asked: “O Messenger of Allah, who are they? Surely they are in loss and deprivation!”
The Prophet ﷺ replied:
◈ The one who lets his garment hang below the ankles (out of pride)
◈ The one who reminds others of his favors
◈ The one who sells his goods by lying under oath
(Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim: 106; Musnad Aḥmad: 5/148, 158, 162, 177, 168)
Narrated by Abū Hurayrah رضي الله عنه, the Prophet ﷺ said:
“Three types of people with whom Allah will not speak on the Day of Judgment, nor will He purify them, nor will He look at them, and for them is a painful punishment:”
◈ An old adulterer (whose age gives no excuse for such sin)
◈ A lying ruler
◈ A proud poor person (who is arrogant despite being in need)
(Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim: 107; Musnad Aḥmad: 2/280)
Narrated by Abū Hurayrah رضي الله عنه, the Prophet ﷺ said:
“Three individuals with whom Allah will not speak on the Day of Judgment, nor will He look at them, nor will He purify them, and they will face a painful punishment:”
◈ One who possesses excess water in a desert but withholds it from travelers
◈ One who lies under oath after ʿAṣr to sell his merchandise
◈ One who pledges allegiance to a leader for worldly gain, fulfilling it if he benefits, and breaking it otherwise
(Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim: 108; Musnad Aḥmad: 2/353, 480)
Narrated by Abū Hurayrah رضي الله عنه, the Prophet ﷺ said:
“There are three people against whom Allah will dispute on the Day of Judgment:”
◈ One who makes a promise in Allah’s name and then deceives
◈ One who sells a free person as a slave and consumes the price
◈ One who hires a laborer, extracts work but does not pay his wages
(Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī: 2227; Musnad Aḥmad: 2/358)
Allah ﷻ says:
“Indeed, those who conceal what Allah has revealed of the Book and exchange it for a small price — they are consuming nothing but fire into their bellies. Allah will not speak to them on the Day of Resurrection, nor will He purify them. And for them is a painful punishment.”
(Sūrah al-Baqarah: 174)
And Allah ﷻ further says:
“Indeed, those who exchange the covenant of Allah and their oaths for a small price — they will have no share in the Hereafter. Allah will neither speak to them nor look at them on the Day of Resurrection, nor will He purify them, and for them is a painful punishment.”
(Sūrah Āl ʿImrān: 77)
In Sunan al-Nasāʾī, it is narrated that on the Day of Judgment, Allah will not speak to the following individuals:
◈ Disobedient to parents
◈ A woman who imitates men
◈ The dayyūth (a man who has no sense of honor regarding the indecency of his wife or family)
(Sunan al-Nasāʾī: 2/541; Tafsīr Ibn Kathīr: 1/375–376 under Āl ʿImrān: 77)
Those from whom Allah ﷻ will not speak on the Day of Judgment, nor purify them, and for whom there is a painful punishment, include:
❶ One who lets his garment hang below the ankles (out of pride)
❷ One who reminds others of his favors
❸ One who lies under oath to sell his goods

⓭ One who conceals or misuses the Qur'an

We must safeguard ourselves from all these sins to avoid being deprived of Allah’s mercy and His speech on the Day of Judgment.
