The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said that “There is no prayer without Surah al-Fātiḥah.”
So should a person recite Surah al-Fātiḥah behind the Imam in every rak‘ah, especially in the third and fourth rak‘ah, when the Imam recites Surah al-Fātiḥah silently?
Please explain in detail from Qur’an and Sunnah so that no ambiguity remains.
Answer
Surah al-Fātiḥah is Essential for Prayer
Arabic Text:
«لَا صَلَاةَ لِمَنْ لَمْ يَقْرَأْ بِفَاتِحَةِ الْكِتَابِ»
Translation (Must):
“There is no prayer for the one who does not recite Surah al-Fātiḥah.”
Reference (Full):
Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī (756), Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim (394)
This ḥadīth is narrated from ‘Ubādah ibn aṣ-Ṣāmit (رضي الله عنه). He himself believed in and practiced the recitation of Surah al-Fātiḥah behind the Imam.
(Kitāb al-Qirāʾāt by al-Bayhaqī, p.59, ḥadīth 133 – with authentic chain)
Commentary of the Scholars
Arabic Text:
“استدل بهذا الحديث عبد الله بن المبارك والأوزاعي ومالك والشافعي وأحمد وإسحاق وأبو ثور وداود على وجوب قراءة الفاتحة خلف الإمام في جميع الصلوات”
Translation (Must):
“From this ḥadīth, ‘Abdullāh ibn al-Mubārak, al-Awzā‘ī, Mālik, al-Shāfi‘ī, Aḥmad, Isḥāq, Abū Thawr and Dāwūd deduced the obligation of reciting Surah al-Fātiḥah behind the Imam in all prayers.”

② Ḥadīth of “A Man from the Companions of the Prophet ﷺ”

Similar in meaning to the previous narration.
Translation (Must):
Its meaning corresponds to the ḥadīth of Anas – affirming silent recitation behind the Imam.

Evidence from the Companions (Āthār aṣ-Ṣaḥābah)
⑥ Sayyidunā ‘Umar (رضي الله عنه)
He ordered recitation of al-Fātiḥah behind the Imam in both loud and silent prayers.
References: al-Mustadrak (1/239); as-Sunan al-Kubrā by al-Bayhaqī (2/167); ad-Dāraqutnī (1/317, ḥadīth 1197,1198)
⑦ Sayyidunā Abū Hurayrah (رضي الله عنه)
He commanded the same in both loud and silent prayers.
References: Musnad al-Ḥumaydī (ḥadīth 980); Ṣaḥīḥ Abī ‘Awānah (2/38; 1/357) – also connected to Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim
⑧ Sayyidunā Abū Sa‘īd al-Khudrī (رضي الله عنه)
He used to order the recitation of Surah al-Fātiḥah behind the Imam.
References: Juzʾ al-Qirāʾah by al-Bukhārī (p.30-31, ḥadīth 57); Naṣr al-Bārī (p.162-163, ḥadīth 105) – chain ḥasan (Āthār as-Sunan, p.172, ḥadīth 358)
⑨ Sayyidunā Ibn ‘Abbās (رضي الله عنه)
He also instructed recitation of Surah al-Fātiḥah behind the Imam.
Reference: Muṣannaf Ibn Abī Shaybah (1/374) – Imām al-Bayhaqī: “This is an authentic chain with no flaw.” (Kitāb al-Qirāʾāt, p.198)
⑩ Sayyidunā ‘Ubādah ibn aṣ-Ṣāmit (رضي الله عنه)
Already mentioned in detail – he himself practiced and instructed recitation behind the Imam.
Review of Opposing Arguments
Some present narrations that do not explicitly mention Surah al-Fātiḥah, but these are not explicit texts against it.
Example:
Ashraf ‘Alī Thānawī (Deobandi) was asked about praying Jumu‘ah in places where Hanafi conditions were not met. He replied:
“In such cases, one should recite Surah al-Fātiḥah behind the Imam, so that at least according to the Shāfi‘ī madhhab the prayer is valid.”
(Tajalliyāt Raḥmānī, p.233 by Qārī Sa‘īd ar-Raḥmān Deobandi)
This shows admission of reciting Surah al-Fātiḥah behind the Imam even in loud prayers, which is against strict Hanafi fiqh.
Clarification of Misunderstood Verses
Verses like:
Arabic Text:
﴿وَإِذَا قُرِئَ الْقُرْآنُ فَاسْتَمِعُوا لَهُ وَأَنْصِتُوا﴾
Translation:
“When the Qur’an is recited, listen to it and remain silent.” (al-A‘rāf: 204)
These refer to general Qur’an recitation in prayer, not to Surah al-Fātiḥah specifically.

Monthly Shahādat, July 1999 edition
Conclusion
The Qur’an, authentic Sunnah, and practice of the noble Companions all prove that reciting Surah al-Fātiḥah behind the Imam in every rak‘ah is obligatory.
This applies to both silent and loud prayers, including the third and fourth rak‘ah.
“This is what I hold, and Allah knows best.”
