In an issue addressed in Monthly Shahadat, it was stated that a person praying alone behind the row (saff) should repeat their prayer, as it is not valid.
In contrast, another scholar, Mubashshir Ahmad Rabbani, opined that in a case of necessity (iḍṭirār), the prayer is valid and one should not pull anyone from the front row, citing the Hadith:
"Whoever connects the row, Allah connects him, and whoever breaks the row, Allah breaks him."
So the question is: Which opinion should students and the general public follow?
A clear explanation is needed in the light of Qur’an and Sunnah.
"The Prophet ﷺ saw a man praying alone behind the row and ordered him to repeat the prayer."
Sunan Abi Dawud: 682, al-Tirmidhi: 230, Ibn Majah: 1004, Ibn Hibban (al-Mawārid): 403, Ibn Khuzaymah: 1569
The chain is authentic.
Shaykh al-Albani also declared it ṣaḥīḥ (Sahih Sunan Abi Dawud, p. 110).
"The prayer of the one who stands alone behind the row is invalid."
Musnad Ahmad 4/23 Hadith 1640, Ibn Majah: 1003, Ibn Khuzaymah: 1569, Ibn Hibban: 401
Chain is authentic, and Bawṣīrī graded its narrators as trustworthy (thiqat)
(Zawā’id Ibn Mājah, p. 159).
– Imam Ahmad, Ishaq ibn Rahawayh, Hammad ibn Abi Sulayman, Muhammad ibn Abi Layla, Wakiʿ all held that one must repeat the prayer if done alone behind the row.
Sunan al-Tirmidhi: 230
– Ibn Abi Shaybah narrated similar views but with a weak chain due to tadlīs.
– Ibn Ḥazm said: the prayer is invalid.
al-Muḥallā 4/52, Issue 514
– ʿAbdullāh ibn Ahmad ibn Ḥanbal said:
"My father (Imam Ahmad) would give fatwa based on this hadith."
Musnad Ahmad 4/228, Hadith 18170
– Ibrāhīm al-Nakhaʿī said: "A person alone behind the row should not bow."
Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah 1/257, Hadith 2635
– Abu Bakr Ibn al-Mundhir:
"The prayer of the lone individual behind the row is invalid based on the Hadith of Wabisah."
al-Awsat 4/184, Issue 1994
– Maulana ʿAbd al-Jabbār Khāndelwī (رحمه الله):
"If there is no space in the row, one should not pray alone; instead, pull someone from the side of the row."
Fatawa ʿUlamāʾ al-Hadīth, Vol. 3, pp. 77–78
The majority are of the view that in cases of necessity, the prayer of the one who stands alone behind the row is valid.
Ṣalāh al-Jamāʿah by Ṣāliḥ ibn Ghānim al-Sadlān, p. 112
– ʿAṭāʾ ibn Rabāḥ said: the prayer need not be repeated.
Musannaf ʿAbd al-Razzāq 2/59, Hadith 2486
(However, this narration is weak due to tadlīs in the chain of ʿAbd al-Razzāq.)
"الْحَقُّ أَحَقُّ أَنْ يُتَّبَعَ"
"Truth is more deserving to be followed."
Although the majority allow it in necessity, the stronger and more correct opinion is that the prayer is not valid if performed alone behind the row.
The Prophet ﷺ was praying when Jābir ibn ʿAbdillah (رضي الله عنه) came. The Prophet placed him to his right.
Then Jabbār ibn Ṣakhr (رضي الله عنه) came, and the Prophet moved both of them behind him.

✿ If a woman is praying alone behind the row, her prayer is valid. She is exempt from this ruling.
✿ A narration says:
"Place the Imam in the center of the row."
Sunan Abi Dawud: 681
However, this narration is weak because the narrator Ummatu al-Wāḥid is unknown.
Taqrīb al-Tahdhīb: 8534
Anwār al-Ṣahīfah fī al-Aḥādīth al-Ḍaʿīfah, p. 20
➊ Some say: The prayer is invalid.
➋ Others say: The prayer is valid.
➌ Some say: The prayer is valid only in case of necessity.
Among these, the first opinion is the strongest, while Mubashshir Ahmad Rabbani considers the third to be the preferred view based on ijtihād.
In matters of ijtihād, one should adopt the stronger opinion while maintaining full respect for scholars.
In the light of the Qur’an and Sunnah,
praying alone behind the row is not valid, and such a prayer must be repeated.
If the row is full, it is better to pull someone from the edge of the row to complete the Sunnah of congregational prayer.
