10 Essential Principles of Spiritual Healing in Islam

Authored by: Dr. Raza Abdullah Pasha (حفظہ اللہ)

Question:

What are the stages of spiritual healing?

❖ Answer:

The following are the essential steps and principles to be observed in the process of Ruqyah (spiritual healing):

Recite “Bismillah” before starting any action.
It is important to begin every action, especially treatment, with the remembrance of Allah ﷻ.

Observance of proper Islamic veil (Hijab) by adult women and presence of a Mahram.
Shari‘ah-prescribed Hijab must be observed, and women should be accompanied by a Mahram male relative.

Removal of dogs and pictures from the house.
Any images of animate beings and the presence of dogs must be removed from the surroundings.

Everyone involved should be in a state of ablution (Wudu).
Maintaining ritual purity is essential during the healing process.

Burn any amulets, threads, or similar items found on the patient.
These items should not be retained, as reliance should only be on Allah ﷻ.

Show humility before Allah ﷻ.
Approach the treatment with a heart filled with humility.

Express one's need and dependence upon Allah ﷻ.
Acknowledge one’s weakness and seek help solely from Allah ﷻ.

Keep the area free from smoke and similar elements (such as ovens, hookahs, and incense smoke).
Avoid any practices or items resembling innovations or superstitions.

Begin with correcting the belief (Aqeedah),
Even if there are shortcomings in prayer, Hijab, etc., the priority should be the correction of creed. Other matters may be addressed later with respect and good manners.

Start the treatment by asking the patient questions.
Inquire about the condition to understand what the person is experiencing. Listen attentively and patiently until they finish speaking, then proceed with the treatment.
