Ḥawḍ al-Kawthar: Exclusive to the Prophet ﷺ or Also for Other Prophets?

Source: Fatawa Ulama-e-Hadith, Volume 09

❖ Question

Will Ḥawḍ al-Kawthar (the Pond of Kawthar) belong solely to the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, or will other prophets also have their own ponds?

✔ Answer

Alḥamdulillāh! The mention of the Ḥawḍ al-Kawthar of the Prophet ﷺ is explicitly established in the Qur’an and Sunnah, and there is no doubt about its authenticity. Allah ﷻ states in the Qur’an:

Indeed, We have granted you al-Kawthar.
(Surah al-Kawthar: 1)

➊ Mention of Ḥawḍ al-Kawthar

The Prophet ﷺ gave glad tidings of this pond to his Ummah, stating that on the Day of Judgment, the believers will gather at this blessed ḥawḍ, where he ﷺ will provide them with water. There are numerous authentic Hadiths about Ḥawḍ al-Kawthar.

➋ Ponds of Other Prophets

Some narrations mention that every prophet will have a pond, and the prophets will take pride in whose followers gather at their pond in greater numbers. According to a narration from Samurah رضي الله عنه, the Prophet ﷺ said:

❝ Every prophet will have a ḥawḍ (pond), and the prophets will boast about whose pond will have more visitors. I hope that mine will have the largest number. ❞
(Sunan Tirmidhi, Bab Sifat al-Ḥawḍ, Hadith: 1489)

➌ Reliability of the Chains

It is important to note that the narrations regarding other prophets having their own ponds are not strongly authenticated. As mentioned in Fath al-Bari, the chains of such narrations are weak.

➍ Summary

◄ The Ḥawḍ al-Kawthar of the Prophet ﷺ is confirmed through the Qur’an and authentic Sunnah.
◄ Some weak narrations suggest that every prophet will have a pond, but their chains are not strong.
◄ According to sound narrations, the Prophet ﷺ's ḥawḍ will have the greatest number of followers on the Day of Judgment.
