وَإِنِّى كُلَّمَا دَعَوْتُهُمْ لِتَغْفِرَ لَهُمْ جَعَلُوٓا۟ أَصَـٰبِعَهُمْ فِىٓ ءَاذَانِهِمْ وَٱسْتَغْشَوْا۟ ثِيَابَهُمْ وَأَصَرُّوا۟ وَٱسْتَكْبَرُوا۟ ٱسْتِكْبَارًا ﴿7﴾
And verily, every time I called unto them that You might forgive them, they thrust their fingers into their ears, covered themselves up with their garments, and persisted (in their refusal), and magnified themselves in pride.
وَإِنِّى wa-innī And indeed, I
كُلَّمَا kullamā every time
دَعَوْتُهُمْ daʿawtuhum I invited them
لِتَغْفِرَ litaghfira that You may forgive
لَهُمْ lahum them
جَعَلُوٓا۟ jaʿalū they put
أَصَـٰبِعَهُمْ aṣābiʿahum their fingers
فِىٓ in
ءَاذَانِهِمْ ādhānihim their ears
وَٱسْتَغْشَوْا۟ wa-is'taghshaw and covered themselves
ثِيَابَهُمْ thiyābahum (with) their garments
وَأَصَرُّوا۟ wa-aṣarrū and persisted
وَٱسْتَكْبَرُوا۟ wa-is'takbarū and were arrogant
ٱسْتِكْبَارًۭا is'tik'bāran (with) pride

7. 1 That is, towards faith and obedience, which is the cause of forgiveness.
7. 2 So that they can hear my voice. So that they cannot see my face, or they put cloths over their heads so that they cannot hear my speech.
7. 3 That is, they persisted in disbelief, did not refrain from it, and did not repent.
7. 4 They showed great arrogance in accepting the truth and complying with the command.
