إِذْ تَلَقَّوْنَهُۥ بِأَلْسِنَتِكُمْ وَتَقُولُونَ بِأَفْوَاهِكُم مَّا لَيْسَ لَكُم بِهِۦ عِلْمٌ وَتَحْسَبُونَهُۥ هَيِّنًا وَهُوَ عِندَ ٱللَّهِ عَظِيمٌ ﴿15﴾
When you were propagating it with your tongues, and uttering with your mouths that whereof you had no knowledge, you counted it a little thing, while with Allâh it was very great.
إِذْ idh When
تَلَقَّوْنَهُۥ talaqqawnahu you received it
بِأَلْسِنَتِكُمْ bi-alsinatikum with your tongues
وَتَقُولُونَ wataqūlūna and you said
بِأَفْوَاهِكُم bi-afwāhikum with your mouths
مَّا what
لَيْسَ laysa not
لَكُم lakum for you
بِهِۦ bihi of it
عِلْمٌۭ ʿil'mun any knowledge
وَتَحْسَبُونَهُۥ wataḥsabūnahu and you thought it
هَيِّنًۭا hayyinan (was) insignificant
وَهُوَ wahuwa while it
عِندَ ʿinda (was) near Allah
ٱللَّهِ l-lahi (was) near Allah
عَظِيمٌۭ ʿaẓīmun great

(Ayah 15) ➊ { اِذْ تَلَقَّوْنَهٗ بِاَلْسِنَتِكُمْ: ’’ تَلَقّٰي يَتَلَقّٰي‘‘} (tafa‘‘ul) means to take something from someone, as He said: «{ فَتَلَقّٰۤى اٰدَمُ مِنْ رَّبِّهٖ كَلِمٰتٍ [البقرۃ : ۳۷ ] “Then Adam learned from his Lord some words.” That is, when you were taking this slander from one another and passing it on, saying, “I heard such and such from so and so,” or “so and so said this,” etc.

{ وَ تَقُوْلُوْنَ بِاَفْوَاهِكُمْ :} That is, this was only a matter of your tongues; neither was there certainty of it in your hearts, nor could the listener be certain of it, as has been said about the hypocrites: «{ يَقُوْلُوْنَ بِاَفْوَاهِهِمْ مَّا لَيْسَ فِيْ قُلُوْبِهِمْ [ آل عمران : ۱۶۷ ] “They say with their mouths what is not in their hearts.”

{ مَا لَيْسَ لَكُمْ بِهٖ عِلْمٌ : ’’ عِلْمٌ ‘‘} The tanween here is for indefiniteness, meaning you were saying with your mouths that of which you had no knowledge.

{ وَ تَحْسَبُوْنَهٗ هَيِّنًا :} You considered it insignificant, the proof of which is that you were taking it from one another and passing it on, or at the very least remaining silent about it, because if you did not consider it insignificant, you would have strongly denied it and stopped the one who said such a thing.

{ وَ هُوَ عِنْدَ اللّٰهِ عَظِيْمٌ :} Whereas slander, no matter who it is against, is a very great sin in the sight of Allah, so when it is against the Mother of the Believers, the wife of the Seal of the Prophets, the Leader of the Messengers, and the Leader of the Children of Adam (peace and blessings be upon him), how great a sin will it be! Razi said that Allah declared them guilty of three sins and warned them of the danger of a great punishment for it. The first sin is that spreading it after hearing it from one another is the propagation of evil, which is a very great sin. The second sin is speaking about something of which one has no knowledge; from this it is understood that only that should be spoken of which one has knowledge, and to speak about something without knowing it to be true is just as forbidden as speaking about something one knows to be false, as He said: «{ وَ لَا تَقْفُ مَا لَيْسَ لَكَ بِهٖ عِلْمٌ [ بني إسرائیل : ۳۶ ] “And do not pursue that of which you have no knowledge.” And the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: [ كَفٰي بِالْمَرْءِ كَذِبًا أَنْ يُّحَدِّثَ بِكُلِّ مَا سَمِعَ ] [ مسلم، المقدمۃ : ۵ ] “It is enough for a man to be considered a liar that he narrates everything he hears.” The third sin is that they considered it insignificant, whereas it is a very great sin.

➏ From this verse it is understood that a person considering a sin to be insignificant does not make it insignificant; rather, it is quite possible that it becomes the cause of his ruin in this world and the Hereafter, when he continues to commit it repeatedly, thinking it insignificant. Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: [ إِنَّ الْعَبْدَ لَيَتَكَلَّمُ بِالْكَلِمَةِ مِنْ رِضْوَانِ اللّٰهِ لَا يُلْقِيْ لَهَا بَالًا يَرْفَعُ اللّٰهُ بِهَا دَرَجَاتٍ وَ إِنَّ الْعَبْدَ لَيَتَكَلَّمُ بِالْكَلِمَةِ مِنْ سَخَطِ اللّٰهِ لَا يُلْقِيْ لَهَا بَالًا يَهْوِيْ بِهَا فِيْ جَهَنَّمَ ] [ بخاري، الرقاق، باب حفظ اللسان : ۶۴۷۸ ] “A servant speaks a word pleasing to Allah, to which he pays no attention, but Allah raises him by it many degrees; and a servant speaks a word displeasing to Allah, to which he pays no attention, but because of it he falls into Hell.”

15. When you were passing it from one tongue to another and saying with your mouths what you had no knowledge of, and you thought it was insignificant, while in the sight of Allah it was tremendous.

It is enough for a person to be considered a liar that he conveys whatever he hears:

To convey something one has merely heard, without verifying it, is a major sin. The Prophet ﷺ said: "It is enough for a person to be considered a liar that he conveys whatever he hears." [مقدمه صحيح مسلم]
