It is narrated from Sayyiduna Sahl bin Sa’d Sa’idi (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) went to reconcile among the Banu Amr bin Awf, and the time for prayer came. The mu’adhdhin came to Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) and said, “Shall I pronounce the iqamah and you will lead the prayer?” Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) said, “Yes.” So Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) began to lead the prayer, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) arrived. The people were in prayer, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) also stood in the row. The people started clapping their hands. Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) would not look to the right or left during the prayer, but when the people increased their clapping, he turned and saw the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) gestured to him to continue leading. Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) raised his hands, praised Allah for the command of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), then stepped back until he stood in the row, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) moved forward and led the prayer. When the prayer was finished, he said: “O Abu Bakr! What prevented you from leading the prayer when I indicated to you to continue?” Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) replied: “It is not befitting for the son of Abu Quhafah to lead the prayer in the presence of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him).” Then he said to the people: “What is the matter with you that you started clapping? Whoever faces something during the prayer should say ‘Subhan Allah’; when he says ‘Subhan Allah’, the imam will pay attention. Clapping is for women.”
