His saying, Exalted is He: {And [due] to Allah from the people is a pilgrimage to the House—for whoever is able to find thereto a way. But whoever disbelieves—then indeed, Allah is free from need of the worlds.}

Dhahhak (may Allah have mercy on him) says: When this verse was revealed: ﴿And [due] to Allah from the people is a pilgrimage to the House﴾, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) gathered the people of religions, that is, the polytheists of Arabia, the Christians, the Jews, the Magians, and the Sabeans. Then he said: Indeed, Allah the Mighty and Majestic has made Hajj obligatory upon you, so perform the pilgrimage to the House of Allah. But only the Muslims accepted it, and some denied the House of Allah, and this is the meaning of Allah the Mighty and Majestic’s statement: ﴿And whoever disbelieves—then indeed, Allah is free from need of the worlds﴾, that is, indeed Allah is independent of all the worlds.

Mujahid (may Allah have mercy on him) said regarding Allah the Exalted’s statement: “And whoever disbelieves, then indeed Allah is free of need from the worlds” (__QUR_N__): Whoever performs Hajj, let him not consider it a virtue, and whoever abandons it, let him not consider it a sin.
