A Bedouin asked Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them): I said to my wife that she is forbidden to me, so has she really become forbidden to me? He replied: She has not become forbidden to you. The Bedouin said: Then what about the statement of Allah, the Exalted: ﴿كُلُّالطَّعَامِكَانَحِلًّالِبَنِيإِسْرَائِيلَإِلَّامَاحَرَّمَإِسْرَائِيلُعَلَىٰنَفْسِهِ﴾ (All food was lawful to the Children of Israel except what Israel made unlawful to himself). Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them) said: Do you know what Israel, that is, Yaqub (peace be upon him), made unlawful to himself? The Bedouin said: No. Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them) said: Israel was afflicted with sciatica, which weakened him, so he made a vow to Allah that if Allah cured him, he would never eat the meat of the thigh. That is why the Jews remove the veins from the bones and do not eat them.
