Shu’bi (may Allah have mercy on him) said: “One of us married a woman, then her husband divorced her before being alone with her, so her brother forgave her dowry. So they went to Shurayh (may Allah have mercy on him), and he considered his forgiveness valid. Then later he said: I forgive the dowry of Banu Murrah. After that, he used to say: ‘The one in whose hand is the knot of marriage’ refers to the husband, that he may forgive the entire dowry and give it to the woman, or the woman may forgive the half of the dowry which Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, has prescribed for her. And if there is a dispute between the two, then the woman will receive half the dowry.”
