Sayyida Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates: "A woman came to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) and sought permission to apply kohl, because her husband had passed away. The Prophet (peace be upon him) did not grant her permission and said: Among you, in the time of ignorance, a woman would complete her waiting period by throwing dung at the end of a whole year, and now the period of waiting (‘iddah) is four months and ten days."

Brief Explanation
Benefit: Jurisprudential Rulings (Waiting Period of Widowhood): During the waiting period (‘iddah), a woman should not apply perfume, should not wear jewelry, should avoid kohl and adornment, and should not accept a marriage proposal. The waiting period (‘iddah): If she is pregnant → until childbirth; if she is not pregnant → four months and ten days ( : “And they shall wait concerning themselves for four months and ten [days]”)
✅ Summary: This hadith is authentic in its chain of narration and clarifies the condition of a woman during the waiting period of widowhood, the limitation of the waiting period, and the rulings regarding abstention from adornment and beautification. The Noble Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) forbade adornments such as kohl and, by mentioning the severe waiting period of previous nations, demonstrated the ease present in the current Shari‘ah.
