Hadith 156

حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدٌ قَالَ: نَا هُشَيْمٌ قَالَ: نَا سَيَّارٌ، عَنْ أَبِي وَائِلٍ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ، قَالَ: جَاءَ إِلَيْهِ رَجُلٌ، فَقَالَ: إِنِّي قَرَأْتُ الْمُفَصَّلَ الْبَارِحَةَ فِي رَكْعَةٍ، فَغَضِبَ، وَقَالَ: إِنَّمَا فُصِّلَ لِتُفَصِّلُوهُ، هَذًّا كَهَذِّ الشِّعْرِ، وَنَثْرًا كَنَثْرِ الدَّقَلِ، لَقَدْ عَلِمْتُ النَّظَائِرَ الَّتِي كَانَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقْرُنُ بَيْنَهُنَّ، بِسُورَتَيْنِ فِي كُلِّ رَكْعَةٍ، بِسُورَتَيْنِ فِي كُلِّ رَكْعَةٍ .
Abu Wa'il (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates: Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) said: A man came to him and said: Last night I recited the Mufassal (the short surahs of the Qur'an) in one rak'ah. So he became angry and said: They were made detailed so that they would be recited in detail. You recite them quickly like poetry and scatter them like cheap dates. I know the surahs which the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to combine and recite in every rak'ah. Two surahs in every rak'ah, two surahs in every rak'ah.
