بَابُ أَحَادِيثِ الْقَهْقَهَةِ فِي الصَّلَاةِ وَعِلَلِهَا
Chapter on hadiths about laughing in prayer and their reasons
Hadith 641
حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ مَخْلَدٍ ، نا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ إِسْمَاعِيلَ الْحَسَّانِيُّ . ح وَحَدَّثَنَا الْحُسَيْنُ بْنُ إِسْمَاعِيلَ ، ثنا أَبُو هِشَامٍ ، قَالا : نا وَكِيعٌ ، عَنْ شَرِيكٍ ، عَنْ أَبِي هَاشِمٍ ، وَقَالَ أَبُو هِشَامٍ ، عَنْ وَكِيعٍ ، قَالَ شَرِيكٌ : سَمِعْتُهُ مِنْ أَبِي هَاشِمٍ ، عَنْ أَبِي الْعَالِيَةِ ، " أَنَّ أَعْمَى وَقَعَ فِي بِئْرٍ ، فَضَحِكَ طَوَائِفُ مِمَّنْ كَانَ مَعَ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، فَأَمَرَهُمْ أَنْ يُعِيدُوا الْوُضُوءَ وَالصَّلاةَ " .
Abu Al-Aliyah narrates: A person fell into a pit, so some of those performing prayer behind the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) laughed. The Prophet (peace be upon him) ordered those who laughed to perform ablution again and repeat the prayer.
Hadith 642
حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرٍ النَّيْسَابُورِيُّ ، نا يُوسُفُ بْنُ سَعِيدٍ ، أنا أَبُو نُعَيْمٍ ، وهَيْثَمُ بْنُ جَمِيلٍ ، قَالا : نا شَرِيكٌ ، عَنْ أَبِي هَاشِمٍ ، عَنْ أَبِي الْعَالِيَةِ ، قَالَ : " كَانَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فِي الصَّلاةِ ، وَفِي الْمَسْجِدِ بِئْرٌ عَلَيْهَا جُلَّةٌ ، فَجَاءَ أَعْمَى فَسَقَطَ فِيهَا ، فَضَحِكَ بَعْضُ الْقَوْمِ ، فَأَمَرَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ مَنْ ضَحِكَ أَنْ يُعِيدَ الْوُضُوءَ وَالصَّلاةَ " .
Abu Al-Aliyah narrates: The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) was leading the prayer, there was a pit in the mosque, a man came who was blind, so some people laughed, so the Prophet (peace be upon him) ordered those who laughed to perform ablution again and offer the prayer.
Hadith 643
حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرٍ النَّيْسَابُورِيُّ ، نا عَلِيُّ بْنُ حَرْبٍ ، نا أَبُو مُعَاوِيَةَ ، ثنا الأَعْمَشُ ، عَنْ إِبْرَاهِيمَ ، قَالَ : " جَاءَ رَجُلٌ ضَرِيرُ الْبَصَرِ ، وَالنَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فِي الصَّلاةِ ، فَعَثَرَ فَتَرَدَّى فِي بِئْرٍ ، فَضَحِكُوا فَأَمَرَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ مَنْ ضَحِكَ أَنْ يُعِيدَ الْوُضُوءَ وَالصَّلاةَ " .
Ibrahim narrates: A blind man came while the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) was leading the prayer. That man slipped and fell into a pit, so the people laughed. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) ordered: "Whoever laughed should perform ablution again and repeat the prayer."
Hadith 644
حَدَّثَنَا إِسْمَاعِيلُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ الصَّفَّارُ ، أَخْبَرَنَا إِسْمَاعِيلُ الْقَاضِي ، نا عَلِيُّ بْنُ الْمَدِينِيِّ L5792 ، قَالَ : قُلْتُ لِعَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ مَهْدِيٍّ : رَوَى هَذَا الْحَدِيثَ إِبْرَاهِيمُ ، مُرْسَلا ؟ فَقَالَ حَدَّثَنِي شَرِيكٌ ، عَنْ أَبِي هَاشِمٍ ، قَالَ : أَنَا حَدَّثْتُ بِهِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ ، عَنْ أَبِي الْعَالِيَةِ رَجَعَ حَدِيثُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ هَذَا الَّذِي أَرْسَلَهُ إِلَى أَبِي الْعَالِيَةِ ، لأَنَّ أَبَا هَاشِمٍ أَنَّهُ حَدَّثَهُ بِهِ عَنْهُ ، قَالَ أَبُو الْحَسَنِ : رَجَعَتْ هَذِهِ الأَحَادِيثُ كُلُّهَا الَّتِي قَدَّمْتُ ذِكْرَهَا فِي هَذَا الْبَابِ إِلَى أَبِي الْعَالِيَةِ الرِّيَاحِيِّ ، وَأَبُو الْعَالِيَةِ ، فَأَرْسَلَ هَذَا الْحَدِيثَ عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، وَلَمْ يُسَمِّ بَيْنَهُ وَبَيْنَهُ رَجُلا سَمِعَهُ مِنْهُ عَنْهُ ، وَقَدْ رَوَى عَاصِمٌ الأَحْوَلُ ، عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ سِيرِينَ ، وَكَانَ عَالِمًا بِأَبِي الْعَالِيَةِ وَبِالْحَسَنِ ، فَقَالَ : لا تَأْخُذُوا بِمَرَاسِيلِ الْحَسَنِ وَلا أَبِي الْعَالِيَةِ فَإِنَّهُمَا لا يُبَالِيَانِ عَنْ مَنْ أَخَذَا .
This narration has been transmitted as a mursal narration from Ibrahim, while through another chain, it has been narrated from Ibrahim from Abu’l-‘Aliyah, and the same narration has been transmitted through some other chains as well. Muhammad ibn Sirin, who was more familiar with Abu’l-‘Aliyah and Hasan al-Basri, used to say: Do not accept the mursal narration transmitted by Abu’l-‘Aliyah, because both of them do not care from whom they have taken the narration.
Hadith 645
حَدَّثَنَا بِذَلِكَ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ مَخْلَدٍ ، نا صَالِحُ بْنُ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ حَنْبَلٍ ، نا عَلِيُّ بْنُ الْمَدِينِيِّ ، سَمِعْتُ جَرِيرًا ، وذَكَرَ عَنْ رَجُلٍ ، عَنْ عَاصِمٍ ، قَالَ : قَالَ لِي ابْنُ سِيرِينَ : " مَا حَدَّثْتَنِي ، فَلا تُحَدِّثْنِي عَنْ رَجُلَيْنِ مِنْ أَهْلِ الْبَصْرَةِ : عَنْ أَبِي الْعَالِيَةِ ، وَالْحَسَنِ ؛ فَإِنَّهُمَا كَانَا لا يُبَالِيَانِ عَنْ مَنْ أَخَذَا حَدِيثَهُمَا ".
Asim narrates: Ibn Sirin said to me: "Relate to me whatever hadith you wish to narrate! But do not narrate to me any hadith on the authority of two men from Basra: Abu’l-‘Aliyah and Hasan, because both of them do not care from whom they have taken their hadith."
Hadith 646
حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ مَخْلَدٍ ، نا عَبَّاسُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ ، نا أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ أَبِي الأَسْوَدِ ، نا دَاوُدُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ ، حَدَّثَنِي وُهَيْبٌ ، نا ابْنُ عَوْنٍ ، عَنْ مُحَمَّدٍ ، قَالَ : " كَانَ أَرْبَعَةٌ يُصَدِّقُونَ مَنْ حَدَّثَهُمْ وَلا يُبَالُونَ مِمَّنْ يَسْمَعُونَ الْحَدِيثَ : الْحَسَنُ ، وَأَبُو الْعَالِيَةِ ، وَحُمَيْدُ بْنُ هِلالٍ ، وَدَاوُدُ بْنُ أَبِي هِنْدَ " . قَالَ الشَّيْخُ : وَلَمْ يَذْكُرِ الرَّابِعَ ، وَهَذَا حَدِيثٌ رُوِيَ عَنِ الأَعْمَشِ ، عَنْ أَبِي سُفْيَانَ ، عَنْ جَابِرٍ فَذَكَرَهُ وَذَكَرَ عِلَّتَهُ.
Muhammad bin Sirin says: There are four individuals who affirm the narration of anyone who relates a hadith to them, and they do not care from whom they have taken the hadith: Hasan al-Basri, Abu’l-‘Aliyah, Humayd bin Hilal, Dawud bin Abi Hind. This narration is transmitted from A‘mash, from Abu Sufyan, from Jabir; he has mentioned this hadith and also mentioned its cause.
Hadith 647
حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو عُبَيْدٍ الْقَاسِمُ بْنُ إِسْمَاعِيلَ ، وَأَبُو بَكْرٍ النَّيْسَابُورِيُّ ، وَأَبُو الْحَسَنِ أَحْمَدُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدَ بُنُ يَزِيْدَ الزَّعْفَرَانِيِّ ، قَالُوا : حَدَّثَنَا إبْرَاهِيمُ بْنُ هَانِئٍ ، نا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَزِيدَ بْنِ سِنَانٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبِي يَزِيدُ بْنُ سِنَانٍ ، نا سُلَيْمَانُ الأَعْمَشُ ، عَنْ أَبِي سُفْيَانِ ، عَنْ جَابِرٍ ، قَالَ : قَالَ لَنَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " مَنْ ضَحِكَ مِنْكُمْ فِي صَلاتِهِ فَلْيَتَوَضَّأْ ثُمَّ لِيُعِدِ الصَّلاةَ " . قَالَ لَنَا أَبُو بَكْرٍ النَّيْسَابُورِيُّ : هَذَا حَدِيثٌ مُنْكَرٌ ، فَلا يَصِحُّ وَالصَّحِيحُ عَنْ جَابِرٍ خِلافُهُ قَالَ الشَّيْخُ أَبُو الْحَسَنِ : يَزِيدُ بْنُ سِنَانٍ ضَعِيفٌ ، وَيُكَنَّى بِأَبِي فَرْوَةَ الرَّهَاوِيِّ ، وَابْنُهُ ضَعِيفٌ أَيْضًا ، وَقَدْ وَهَمَ فِي هَذَا الْحَدِيثِ فِي مَوْضِعَيْنِ أَحَدُهُمَا فِي رَفْعِهِ إِيَّاهُ إِلَى النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، وَالآخَرُ فِي لَفْظِهِ وَالصَّحِيحُ عَنِ الأَعْمَشِ ، عَنْ أَبِي سُفْيَانَ ، عَنْ جَابِرٍ مِنْ قَوْلِهِ : " مَنْ ضَحِكَ فِي الصَّلاةِ أَعَادَ الصَّلاةَ وَلَمْ يُعِدِ الْوُضُوءَ " . وَكَذَلِكَ رَوَاهُ عَنِ الأَعْمَشِ جَمَاعَةٌ مِنَ الرُّفَعَاءِ الثِّقَاتُ ، مِنْهُمْ : سُفْيَانُ الثَّوْرِيُّ ، وَأَبُو مُعَاوِيَةَ الضَّرِيرُ ، وَوَكِيعٌ ، وَعَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ دَاوُدَ الْخُرَيْبِيُّ ، وَعُمَرُ بْنُ عَلِيٍّ الْمُقَدَّمِيُّ ، وَغَيْرُهُمْ ، وَكَذَلِكَ رَوَاهُ شُعْبَةُ ، وَابْنُ جُرَيْجٍ ، عَنْ يَزِيدَ بْنِ أَبِي خَالِدٍ ، عَنْ أَبِي سُفْيَانَ ، عَنْ جَابِرٍ.
Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to us: “Whoever laughed during the prayer should perform ablution again and repeat the prayer.” Shaykh Abu Bakr Nishapuri says: This hadith is munkar and not authentic. The opposite of this is authentically reported from Sayyiduna Jabir.
Hadith 648
حَدَّثَنَا حَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ مُبَشِّرٍ ، نا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ سِنَانٍ . ح وَحَدَّثَنَا الْقَاضِي أَبُو عُمَرَ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يُوسُفَ ، نا الْفَضْلُ بْنُ مُوسَى ، قَالا : نا عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ مَهْدِيٍّ ، نا سُفْيَانُ ، عَنِ الأَعْمَشِ ، عَنْ أَبِي سُفْيَانَ ، عَنْ جَابِرٍ ، قَالَ : " لَيْسَ فِي الضَّحِكِ وُضُوءٌ " .
Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "(During prayer) laughing does not necessitate ablution."
Hadith 649
حَدَّثَنَا حَدَّثَنَا عُثْمَانُ بْنُ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ بِشْرٍ ، نا إِبْرَاهِيمُ الْحَرْبِيُّ ، نا أَبُو نُعَيْمٍ ، نا سُفْيَانُ ، عَنِ الأَعْمَشِ ، عَنْ أَبِي سُفْيَانَ ، عَنْ جَابِرٍ ، قَالَ : " لَيْسَ فِي الضَّحِكِ وُضُوءٌ " .
Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "(During prayer) laughing does not necessitate ablution."
Hadith 650
حَدَّثَنَا حَدَّثَنَا الْحُسَيْنُ بْنُ إِسْمَاعِيلَ ، نا أَبُو هِشَامٍ الرِّفَاعِيُّ ، نا وَكِيعٌ ، نا الأَعْمَشُ ، عَنْ أَبِي سُفْيَانَ ، عَنْ جَابِرٍ ، أَنَّهُ سُئِلَ عَنِ الرَّجُلِ يَضْحَكُ فِي الصَّلاةِ : فَقَالَ : " يُعِيدُ الصَّلاةَ وَلا يُعِيدُ الْوُضُوءَ " .
Sufyan narrates: It was asked from Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) about a person who laughs during prayer, (so he said:) "He will repeat the prayer, but ablution will not be obligatory upon him."
Hadith 651
حَدَّثَنَا حَدَّثَنَا دَعْلَجُ بْنُ أَحْمَدَ ، نا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَلِيِّ بْنِ زَيْدٍ ، نا سَعِيدُ بْنُ مَنْصُورٍ ، نا أَبُو مُعَاوِيَةَ ، نا الأَعْمَشُ ، عَنْ أَبِي سُفْيَانَ ، عَنْ جَابِرٍ ، قَالَ : " إِذَا ضَحِكَ الرَّجُلُ فِي الصَّلاةِ أَعَادَ الصَّلاةَ وَلَمْ يُعِدِ الْوُضُوءَ " .
Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "When a person laughs during the prayer, he should repeat the prayer, but ablution is not obligatory upon him."
Hadith 652
حَدَّثَنَا حَدَّثَنَا عُثْمَانُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ بِشْرٍ ، نا إِبْرَاهِيمُ الْحَرْبِيُّ ، ثنا أَبُو بَكْرٍ ، نا أَبُو مُعَاوِيَةَ ، قَالَ : وَنا ابْنُ نُمَيْرٍ ، نا وَكِيعٌ ، قَالَ : وَنا إِسْحَاقُ بْنُ إِسْمَاعِيلَ ، نا جَرِيرٌ ، وَحَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ عَمْرٍو ، نا حُسَيْنُ بْنُ عَلِيٍّ ، عَنْ زَائِدَةَ ، كُلُّهُمْ عَنِ الأَعْمَشِ ، عَنْ أَبِي سُفْيَانَ ، عَنْ جَابِرٍ " إِذَا ضَحِكَ فِي الصَّلاةِ أَعَادَ الصَّلاةَ وَلَمْ يُعِدِ الْوُضُوءَ " .
Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "When a person laughs during the prayer, he should repeat the prayer, but it is not obligatory for him to perform ablution."
Hadith 653
حَدَّثَنَا حَدَّثَنَا نَهْشَلُ بْنُ دَارِمٍ ، نا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ مُلاعِبٍ ، ثنا وَرْدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ، نا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ طَلْحَةَ ، عَنِ الأَعْمَشِ ، عَنْ أَبِي سُفْيَانَ ، عَنْ جَابِرٍ ، أَنَّهُ سُئِلَ عَنِ الضَّحِكِ فِي الصَّلاةِ ، فَقَالَ : " يُعِيدُ وَلا يَتَوَضَّأُ " .
It is narrated about Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him): He was asked about laughing during the prayer, so he said: "That person will repeat the prayer, but it is not obligatory for him to perform (ablution)."
Hadith 654
حَدَّثَنَا حَدَّثَنَا عَمْرُو بْنُ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ عَلِيٍّ الْقَطَّانُ ، نا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْوَلِيدِ ، نا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ ، نا شُعْبَةُ ، عَنْ يَزِيدَ أَبِي خَالِدٍ ، قَالَ : سَمِعْتُ أَبَا سُفْيَانَ ، يُحَدِّثُ عَنْ جَابِرِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ، أَنَّهُ قَالَ فِي الضَّحِكِ فِي الصَّلاةِ : " لَيْسَ عَلَيْهِ إِعَادَةُ الْوُضُوءِ " . وَعَنْ يَزِيدَ أَبِي خَالِدٍ ، عَنِ الشَّعْبِيِّ ، مِثْلَهُ.
Abu Sufyan narrated this statement: Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) said regarding a person who laughs during prayer: "That person should repeat the prayer, but it is not necessary to perform ablution again." The same narration is also transmitted from Shu'bi with another chain of transmission.
Hadith 655
حَدَّثَنَا حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ مَخْلَدٍ ، نا سُلَيْمَانُ بْنُ تَوْبَةَ ، حَدَّثَنَا الْمُثَنَّى بْنُ مُعَاذٍ ، نا أَبِي ، نا شُعْبَةُ ، عَنْ يَزِيدَ أَبِي خَالِدٍ ، سَمِعَ أَبَا سُفْيَانَ ، سَمِعَ جَابِرًا ، يَقُولُ : " لَيْسَ عَلَى مَنْ ضَحِكَ فِي الصَّلاةِ وُضُوءٌ " . وَعَنْ يَزِيدَ أَبِي خَالِدٍ ، عَنِ الشَّعْبِيِّ ، مِثْلَهُ.
Abu Sufyan narrates: He heard Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) say: "Whoever laughs during the prayer, wudu does not become obligatory upon him." The same narration is also transmitted with another chain of narration.
Hadith 656
حَدَّثَنَا حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ مُبَشِّرٍ ، ثنا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ سِنَانٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ ، عَنْ شُعْبَةَ ، عَنْ يَزِيدَ أَبِي خَالِدٍ ، قَالَ : سَمِعْتُ أَبَا سُفْيَانَ ، عَنْ جَابِرٍ ، قَالَ : " لَيْسَ فِي الضَّحِكِ وُضُوءٌ " . وَعَنْ شُعْبَةَ ، عَنْ يَزِيدَ أَبِي خَالِدٍ ، وَعَاصِمٍ الأَحْوَلِ ، سَمِعَا الشَّعْبِيَّ ، مِثْلَهُ سَوَاءً.
Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "(During prayer) laughing does not necessitate ablution."
Hadith 657
حَدَّثَنَا حَدَّثَنَا عُثْمَانُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ ، نا إِبْرَاهِيمُ الْحَرْبِيُّ ، نا عَلِيُّ بْنُ مُسْلِمٍ ، نا أَبُو عَاصِمٍ ، عَنِ ابْنِ جُرَيْجٍ ، عَنْ يَزِيدَ أَبِي خَالِدٍ ، عَنْ أَبِي سُفْيَانَ ، عَنْ جَابِرٍ ، قَالَ : " لَيْسَ فِي الضَّحِكِ وُضُوءٌ " . وَرَوَاهُ أَبُو شَيْبَةَ ، عَنْ أَبِي خَالِدٍ ، فَرَفَعَهُ إِلَى النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ.
Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "(During prayer) laughing does not necessitate ablution (i.e., it does not break wudu)."
Hadith 658
حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الْبَاقِي بْنُ قَانِعٍ ، نا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ بِشْرِ بْنِ مَرْوَانَ الصَّيْرَفِيُّ ، نا الْمُنْذِرُ بْنُ عَمَّارٍ ، نا أَبُو شَيْبَةَ ، عَنْ يَزِيدَ أَبِي خَالِدٍ ، عَنْ أَبِي سُفْيَانَ ، عَنْ جَابِرٍ ، عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، قَالَ : " الضَّحِكُ يُنْقِضُ الصَّلاةَ وَلا يُنْقِضُ الْوُضُوءَ " . خَالَفَهُ إِسْحَاقُ بْنُ بُهْلُولٍ عَنْ أَبِيهِ فِي لَفْظِهِ.
Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) reports from the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that he said: "Laughing breaks the prayer, but it does not break the ablution."
Hadith 659
حَدَّثَنَا بِهِ أَبُو جَعْفَرٍ أَحْمَدُ بْنُ إِسْحَاقَ بْنِ بُهْلُولٍ ، حَدَّثَنِي أبِي ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنِي أبِي ، عَنْ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ ، عَنْ يَزِيدَ أَبِي خَالِدٍ ، عَنْ أَبِي سُفْيَانَ ، عَنْ جَابِرٍ ، قَالَ : قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " الْكَلامُ يُنْقِضُ الصَّلاةَ وَلا يُنْقِضُ الْوُضُوءَ " .
On the contrary, there is another narration as well. Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "(Speaking during prayer) breaks the prayer, it does not break the ablution."
Hadith 660
حَدَّثَنَا حَدَّثَنَا عُثْمَانُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ بِشْرٍ ، نا إِبْرَاهِيمُ الْحَرْبِيُّ ، نا مُوسَى ، وَابْنُ عَائِشَةَ ، قَالا : نا حَمَّادُ بْنُ سَلَمَةَ ، ثنا حَبِيبٌ الْمُعَلِّمُ ، عَنْ عَطَاءٍ ، عَنْ جَابِرٍ ، قَالَ : " كَانَ لا يَرَى عَلَى الَّذِي يَضْحَكُ فِي الصَّلاةِ وُضُوءًا " .
It is narrated about Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him): In his view, laughing during prayer does not necessitate ablution.
Hadith 661
حَدَّثَنَا الْحُسَيْنُ بْنُ إِسْمَاعِيلَ ، نا أَبُو هِشَامٍ ، نا وَكِيعٌ ، نا سُفْيَانُ ، عَنْ أَبِي الزُّبَيْرِ ، عَنْ جَابِرٍ ، قَالَ : " لا يَقْطَعُ التَّبَسُّمُ الصَّلاةَ حَتَّى يُقَرْقِرَ " . رَفَعَهُ ثَابِتُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ ، عَنْ سُفْيَانَ.
Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Smiling does not break the prayer; as long as a person does not laugh out loud (the prayer is not broken)." The same narration is also transmitted with another chain as a "marfu‘" narration.
Hadith 662
حَدَّثَنَا حَدَّثَنَا عُثْمَانُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ بِشْرٍ ، نا إِبْرَاهِيمُ الْحَرْبِيُّ ، نا بِشْرُ بْنُ الْوَلِيدِ ، نا إِسْحَاقُ بْنُ يَحْيَى ، عَنِ الْمُسَيِّبِ بْنِ رَافِعٍ ، عَنِ ابْنِ مَسْعُودٍ ، قَالَ : " إِذَا ضَحِكَ أَحَدُكُمْ فِي الصَّلاةِ فَعَلَيْهِ إِعَادَةُ الصَّلاةِ " .
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) says: When a person laughs during the prayer, it becomes obligatory upon him to repeat the prayer.
Hadith 663
حَدَّثَنَا حَدَّثَنَا عُثْمَانُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ ، نا إِبْرَاهِيمُ الْحَرْبِيُّ ، نا أَبُو نُعَيْمٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا سُلَيْمَانُ بْنُ الْمُغِيرَةِ ، عَنْ حُمَيْدِ بْنِ هِلالٍ ، قَالَ : خَرَجَ أَبُو مُوسَى فِي وَفْدٍ فِيهِمْ رَجُلٌ مِنْ عَبْدِ الْقَيْسِ أَعْوَرُ ، فَصَلَّى أَبُو مُوسَى فَرَكَعُوا فَنَكَصُوا عَلَى أَعْقَابِهِمْ فَتَرَدَّى الأَعْوَرُ فِي بِئْرٍ ، قَالَ الأَحْنَفُ : فَلَمَّا سَمِعْتُهُ يَتَرَدَّى فِيهَا فَمَا مِنَ الْقَوْمِ إِلا ضَحِكَ غَيْرِي ، وَغَيْرَ أَبِي مُوسَى فَلَمَّا قَضَى الصَّلاةَ ، قَالَ : " مَا بَالُ هَؤُلاءِ ؟ " ، قَالُوا : فُلانٌ تَرَدَّى فِي بِئْرٍ ، " فَأَمَرَهُمْ فَأَعَادُوا الصَّلاةَ " .
Humaid bin Hilal narrates: Sayyiduna Abu Musa Ash'ari (may Allah be pleased with him) set out with a delegation, and among this delegation was a blind man from the tribe of Abdul Qais. Sayyiduna Abu Musa Ash'ari (may Allah be pleased with him) was leading the prayer; when everyone went into bowing (ruku'), they lowered their heads, and the blind man who was behind them fell into a well. The narrator named Ahnaf states: When I heard his voice as he fell into the well, everyone present except for me and Sayyiduna Abu Musa Ash'ari (may Allah be pleased with him) started laughing. Sayyiduna Abu Musa (may Allah be pleased with him) completed the prayer and inquired: What happened to these people? They informed him: So-and-so person fell into the pit. So Sayyiduna Abu Musa ordered them to repeat the prayer.
Hadith 664
حَدَّثَنَا حَدَّثَنَا دَعْلَجُ بْنُ أَحْمَدَ ، نا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَلِيِّ بْنِ زَيْدٍ ، نا سَعِيدُ بْنُ مَنْصُورٍ ، نا هُشَيْمٌ ، نا سُلَيْمَانُ بْنُ الْمُغِيرَةِ ، عَنْ حُمَيْدِ بْنِ هِلالٍ ، قَالَ : صَلَّى أَبُو مُوسَى بِأَصْحَابِهِ ، فَرَأَوْا شَيْئًا فَضَحِكُوا مِنْهُ ، قَالَ أَبُو مُوسَى حَيْثُ انْصَرَفَ مِنْ صَلاتِهِ : " مَنْ كَانَ ضَحِكَ مِنْكُمْ فَلْيُعِدِ الصَّلاةَ " .
Humaid bin Hilal narrates: Sayyiduna Abu Musa Ash'ari (may Allah be pleased with him) was leading his companions in prayer. His companions saw something that made them laugh, so after finishing the prayer, Sayyiduna Abu Musa Ash'ari said: Whoever among you laughed should repeat the prayer.
Hadith 665
نا نا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ الْوَكِيلُ ، نا الْحَسَنُ بْنُ عَرَفَةَ ، ثنا هُشَيْمٌ ، عَنْ سُلَيْمَانَ بْنِ الْمُغِيرَةِ ، عَنْ حُمَيْدِ بْنِ هِلالٍ ، عَنْ أَبِي مُوسَى الأَشْعَرِيِّ ، أَنَّهُ كَانَ يُصَلِّي بِالنَّاسِ فَرَأَوْا شَيْئًا فَضَحِكَ بَعْضُ مَنْ كَانَ مَعَهُ ، فَقَالَ أَبُو مُوسَى حَيْثُ انْصَرَفَ : " مَنْ كَانَ ضَحِكَ مِنْكُمْ فَلْيُعِدِ الصَّلاةَ ".
It is narrated about Sayyiduna Abu Musa Ash'ari, may Allah be pleased with him: He was leading the people in prayer, and the people saw something due to which some of them laughed while following Sayyiduna Abu Musa. So after completing the prayer, Sayyiduna Abu Musa, may Allah be pleased with him, said: Whoever among you laughed should repeat the prayer.
Hadith 666
حَدَّثَنَا الْحُسَيْنُ بْنُ إِسْمَاعِيلَ ، نا يَعْقُوبُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ ، نا عَلِيُّ بْنُ ثَابِتٍ . ح وَحَدَّثَنَا أَبُو حَامِدٍ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ هَارُونَ ، نا مُحَمَّدٌ حَاتِمٌ الزِّمِّيُّ ، ثنا عَلِيُّ بْنُ ثَابِتٍ ، عَنِ الْوَازِعِ بْنِ نَافِعٍ الْعُقَيْلِيِّ ، عَنْ أَبِي سَلَمَةَ بْنِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ ، عَنْ جَابِرٍ ، أَنّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ كَانَ يُصَلِّي بِأَصْحَابِهِ صَلاةَ الْعَصْرِ فَتَبَسَّمَ فِي الصَّلاةِ ، فَلَمَّا انْصَرَفَ قِيلَ لَهُ : يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ تَبَسَّمْتَ وَأَنْتَ تُصَلِّي ، قَالَ : فَقَالَ : " إِنَّهُ مَرَّ بِي مِيكَائِيلُ عَلَيْهِ السَّلامُ ، وَعَلَى جَنَاحِهِ غُبَارٌ فَضَحِكَ إِلَيَّ فَتَبَسَّمْتُ إِلَيْهِ ، وَهُوَ رَاجِعٌ مِنْ طَلَبِ الْقَوْمِ " .
Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was leading his companions (may Allah be pleased with them) in the ‘Asr prayer, and during the prayer, he smiled. When he finished the prayer, it was said: O Messenger of Allah! You smiled during the prayer? The narrator states: The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Mikail (peace be upon him) passed by me, and there was dust on his wings. He smiled when he saw me, so I smiled when I saw him. He was returning after pursuing a group of (the enemy).”
Hadith 667
حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ مَخْلَدٍ ، ثنا يَزِيدُ بْنُ الْهَيْثَمِ الْبَدَّاءُ ، أنا صُبْحُ بْنُ دِينَارٍ ، نا الْمُعَافَى بْنُ عِمْرَانَ ، نا ابْنُ لَهِيعَةَ ، عَنْ زَبَّانَ بْنِ فَائِدٍ ، عَنْ سَهْلِ بْنِ مُعَاذٍ ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ ، عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، قَالَ : " الضَّاحِكُ فِي الصَّلاةِ وَالْمُلْتَفِتُ وَالْمُفَرْقِعُ أَصَابِعَهُ بِمَنْزِلَةٍ " .
Sahl bin Mu'adh narrates from his father that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "The one who laughs during prayer, the one who looks here and there, and the one who cracks his fingers are all of the same status."
Hadith 668
حَدَّثَنَا الْقَاضِي حَدَّثَنَا الْقَاضِي أَحْمَدُ بْنُ إِسْحَاقَ بْنِ بُهْلُولٍ ، حَدَّثَنِي أَبِي مُنَاوِلَةَ ، عَنِ الْمُسَيِّبِ بْنِ شَرِيكٍ . ح وَحَدَّثَنَا يُوسُفُ بْنُ يَعْقُوبَ بْنِ إِسْحَاقَ بْنِ الْبُهْلُولِ ، نا جَدِّي ، نا الْمُسَيِّبُ بْنُ شَرِيكٍ ، عَنِ الأَعْمَشِ ، عَنْ أَبِي سُفْيَانَ ، عَنْ جَابِرٍ ، قَالَ : " لَيْسَ عَلَى مَنْ ضَحِكَ فِي الصَّلاةِ إِعَادَةُ وُضُوءٍ ، إِنَّمَا كَانَ ذَلِكَ لَهُمْ حِينَ ضَحِكُوا خَلْفَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ " .
Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Whoever laughs during the prayer, it is not obligatory for him to perform ablution; this ruling was for those who were performing prayer behind the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him).
