Sayyiduna Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was asked about a lost item. He said: "It is not permissible to use a lost item. Whoever picks it up should announce it for one year. If its owner comes, he should return it to him. If its owner does not come, he should give it in charity. And if later its owner comes, he will have the choice regarding his item or something similar to it."
