Chapter: The saying of the Prophet (peace be upon him): "The imam is appointed to be followed."

حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو حَامِدٍ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ هَارُونَ الْحَضْرَمِيُّ ، ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى الْقُطَعِيُّ ، ثنا سَالِمُ بْنُ نُوحٍ ، ثنا عُمَرُ بْنُ عَامِرٍ ، وَسَعِيدُ بْنُ أَبِي عَرُوبَةَ ، عَنْ قَتَادَةَ ، عَنْ يُونُسَ بْنِ جُبَيْرٍ ، عَنْ حِطَّانَ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ الرَّقَاشِيِّ ، قَالَ : صَلَّى بِنَا أَبُو مُوسَى ، فَقَالَ أَبُو مُوسَى : إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ كَانَ يُعَلِّمُنَا إِذَا صَلَّى بِنَا قَالَ : " إِنَّمَا جُعِلَ الإِمَامُ لِيُؤْتَمَّ بِهِ ، فَإِذَا كَبَّرَ فَكَبِّرُوا ، وَإِذَا قَرَأَ فَأَنْصِتُوا " . هَكَذَا أَمْلاهُ عَلَيْنَا أَبُو حَامِدٍ مُخْتَصَرًا ، سَالِمُ بْنُ نُوحٍ لَيْسَ بِالْقَوِيِّ.
Hattan bin Abdullah Raqashi narrates: Once, Sayyiduna Abu Musa Ash'ari (may Allah be pleased with him) led us in prayer. Sayyiduna Abu Musa informed us: When the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) used to lead us in prayer, he would teach us. He (peace be upon him) said: "The imam has been appointed so that he may be followed; when he says the takbir, you should also say the takbir; when he recites (Qur'an), you should remain silent." Shaykh Abu Hamid dictated this narration to us in this brief manner. The narrator of this narration, Salim bin Nuh, is not reliable.
