Brief Explanation
(Commentary on Hadith 2734)
Calling grapes "karm" was prohibited because wine is made from them, and the Arabs used to call them "karm" because, in their view, drinking wine produced generosity and nobility. To refute their notion, it was forbidden to call grapes by this name. It was also explained that "karm" is actually the attribute of a Muslim, who is the embodiment of generosity. And Allah knows best.
