Hadith 2720

The Commander of the Faithful, Sayyiduna Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came to us until he placed his (blessed) foot between me and Sayyida Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her) and taught us that "when we go to bed, we should say «سبحان الله» 33 times, «الحمد لله» 33 times, and «الله اكبر» 34 times."

Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I have never abandoned these supplications. A person asked: Not even on the night of Siffin? He replied: Yes, not even on the night of Siffin did I abandon them.

Brief Explanation
(Commentary on Hadith 2719)

Siffin is that battle where war broke out between Sayyiduna Ali and Sayyiduna Muawiyah (radi Allahu anhuma). Even in the state of war, they did not abandon this most important practice.

In the narration of Sahih Bukhari, it is mentioned that Sayyida Fatimah al-Zahra (radi Allahu anha) had requested a servant, to which the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) replied to his beloved daughter: “Shall I not tell you something better than a servant?” and then he taught her this practice. Thus, from this, the virtue of reciting tasbih (subhan Allah), tahleel (la ilaha illallah), and takbir (Allahu akbar) before sleeping is established. Maulana Safiur Rahman Mubarakpuri (rahimahullah) once, in the context of this hadith, stated that whoever acts upon this practice, Allah will grant him such strength and energy that he will not feel the need for a servant, and fatigue and tiredness will also be removed.

In sha Allah.
