Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When any one of you lies down on his bed, he should shake out his bed with the edge of his lower garment, for he does not know what may have come onto it in his absence. Then he should recite this supplication: «اَللّٰهُمَّبِكَوَضَعْتُ . . . . . . الخ» O Allah! In Your name I have laid down my side (on the bed), and in Your name I will rise. If You take my soul, then forgive it, and if You release it (keep me alive), then protect it as You protect Your righteous servants."

Brief Explanation
(Commentary on Hadiths 2717 to 2719) These hadiths mention the etiquettes and supplications (ad‘iyah) related to sleeping. In the narration of Sahih Bukhari, it is stated that when you intend to sleep, perform ablution (wudu) as you do for prayer, then dust off your bed, lest some insect or the like has crawled over it. In another narration, it is mentioned to recite Ayat al-Kursi, the last two verses of Surah al-Baqarah once, and «﴿قُلْهُوَاللّٰهُأَحَدٌ﴾ ، ﴿قُلْأَعُوذُبِرَبِّالْفَلَقِ﴾ ، ﴿قُلْأَعُوذُبِرَبِّالنَّاسِ﴾» three times each, then blow into your hands and wipe them over your entire body as far as your hands can reach, and recite the aforementioned supplications, and engage in tasbih (glorification) and tahlil (declaration of the oneness of Allah). By the permission of Allah, the Lord of the worlds, there will be protection, and the one who recites will remain safe from every calamity and distress. These are true etiquettes and firm remembrances (adhkar) upon which one should have complete conviction. Insha’Allah, by the blessing of these adhkar, a person will also remain safe from insomnia and frightening dreams.
