Sayyiduna Abu Dharr Ghifari (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was performing prayer. When he had finished the prayer, I came to him and I was the first person to greet him with the Islamic greeting. He (peace and blessings be upon him) replied: “Wa alaikas-salam wa rahmatullah. Which tribe are you from?” I said: From Ghifar. He (peace and blessings be upon him) gestured with his hand (or lowered it). I thought to myself: Perhaps he (peace and blessings be upon him) did not like my affiliation with Ghifar.

Brief Explanation
(Commentary on Hadith 2674)
There is a detailed and lengthy narration in Sahih Muslim that I said—and I was the first person who said: "As-salamu alayk." The Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam replied: "Wa alayk as-salam wa rahmatullah."
From this, the method of giving greetings (salam) and responding to them is understood.
The expression of dislike could be due to the assumption of Sayyiduna Abu Dharr radi Allahu anhu, or it could be because of the mischief of the tribe of Ghifar or their considering the sacred months as permissible for fighting, as is mentioned at the beginning of the narration in Sahih Muslim. Or, it may be that the very name is disliked, because "Ghifar" means "one with a blemished face."
