Brief Explanation
(Commentary on Hadith 2672)

From this hadith, it is established that a non-mahram man may greet non-mahram women with salam.

The scholars (ulama) have said: If there is no fear of temptation (fitnah), then a man may greet a woman and a woman may greet a man with salam, as is established from the Noble Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam), and this is the correct view. The noble Companions (Sahabah) also used to greet the Mothers of the Believers (azwaj-e-mutahharat) with salam.

However, it is not permissible, rather it is forbidden (haram), to shake hands (musafahah) with a non-mahram woman.

There is no objection in giving salam, nor is there any harm in replying to it.

And Allah knows best.
