أَخْبَرَنَا الْحَكَمُ بْنُ نَافِعٍ، عَنْ شُعَيْبِ بْنِ أَبِي حَمْزَةَ، عَنْ الزُّهْرِيِّ، قَالَ: كَانَ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ جُبَيْرِ بْنِ مُطْعِمٍ يُحَدِّثُ عَنْ مُعَاوِيَةَ أَنَّهُ قَالَ وَهُوَ عِنْدَهُ فِي وَفْدٍ مِنْ قُرَيْشٍ: إِنِّي سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، يَقُولُ: "إِنَّ هَذَا الْأَمْرَ فِي قُرَيْشٍ، لَا يُعَادِيهِمْ أَحَدٌ إِلَّا كَبَّهُ اللَّهُ عَلَى وَجْهِهِ، مَا أَقَامُوا الدِّينَ".
Imam Zuhri, may Allah have mercy on him, said: Muhammad bin Jubair bin Mut’im used to narrate a hadith from Sayyiduna Muawiyah, may Allah be pleased with him, at the time when Muhammad was with the delegation of Quraysh with him. He said: I heard the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, saying: “This caliphate will remain among the Quraysh, and whoever opposes them, Allah Almighty will cast him down on his face as long as they (the Quraysh) remain established upon the religion.”
Brief Explanation
(Commentary on Hadith 2556)
When the people of Quraysh abandon the religion and the Shari‘ah, then the caliphate and governance will be taken away from them.
Just as the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) foretold, so it happened.
For five to six hundred years, the caliphate of the Banu Umayyah and Banu Abbasiyyah, who were Qurayshi, remained established. When they ceased to follow the Shari‘ah, their caliphate was taken away from them, and from that time until today, the Quraysh have not regained the caliphate or leadership.
