Sayyiduna Bara’ bin Azib (may Allah be pleased with them both) says: On the day of the Battle of Ahzab (Trench), the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was carrying earth with us, and because of the dust, the whiteness of his armpits was concealed, and he was humming these verses:
(Meaning: “O Allah! If it were not for Your guidance, we would never have found the right path, nor could we have given charity, nor performed prayer. So now, O Allah, grant tranquility to our hearts, and when we meet the enemy, make us steadfast.
The enemies have transgressed against us; whenever they try to put us into trial, we refuse.”) The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was reciting these verses aloud.

Brief Explanation
(The Explanation of Hadiths 2490 to 2492)
The translation of these verses by Maulana Waheed uz-Zaman rahimahullah has been rendered in verse as follows:
If You had not been the Guide, where would salvation be found? How would we have performed prayers, how would we have given zakat? Now send down tranquility upon us, O Lion of Lofty Attributes, Make our feet firm, grant us steadfastness in battle. Without cause, these disbelievers have attacked us with oppression, When they try to mislead us, we do not listen to their words.
The meaning of the last words mentioned in the hadith «إِنَّالْاُوْلَىٰقَدْبَغَوْاعَلَيْنَا» is that: O Allah! The enemies have taken steps against us without any reason and have wronged us, therefore we have been compelled to come to the field in response to them.
From this, it is evident that Islamic warfare is defensive, whose purpose is to extinguish turmoil and corruption and to create an atmosphere of peace and security.
Those who accuse Islam of bloodshed and violence are demonstrating complete ignorance of the truth.
(Raaz rahimahullah)
From this hadith, the humility and mercy and compassion of the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam are established, that he did not sit at ease by assigning work to others, but himself wielded the pickaxe and shovel in the trench, carried earth, and his blessed body would become covered in dust. Also, from this hadith, it is established that reciting Islamic martial poetry (rajaz) during work is permissible, and that reciting poetry aloud is also established.
