Hadith 2436

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever fasts for one day in the way of Allah, seeking Allah's pleasure, Allah will keep him seventy years' distance away from Hell."

Brief Explanation
(Commentary on Hadith 2435)
Maulana Dawood rahimahullah has written in the explanation of this hadith: The absolute mujtahid, Imam Bukhari rahimahullah, wishes to convey that in the Qur’an and Hadith, the term “fi sabilillah” (in the way of Allah) is, for the most part, used specifically for jihad. In the mentioned hadith, what is meant is fasting (sawm) while engaged in jihad, and by this, literal fasting is intended, and it is this for which such virtue is mentioned.
The reality is that the fast (sawm) of a mujahid (one striving in jihad) and the prayer (salah) of a mujahid hold a very lofty status (on the condition that it is purely for the sake of Allah).
