أَخْبَرَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَزِيدَ الرِّفَاعِيُّ، حَدَّثَنَا الْعَقَدِيُّ، حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ، عَنْ قَتَادَةَ، عَنْ يُونُسَ بْنِ جُبَيْرٍ يُحَدِّثُ: عَنْ كَثِيرِ بْنِ الصَّلْتِ، عَنْ زَيْدِ بْنِ ثَابِتٍ، قَالَ: أَشْهَدُ لَسَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ , يَقُولُ: "الشَّيْخُ وَالشَّيْخَةُ إِذَا زَنَيَا، فَارْجُمُوهُمَا الْبَتَّةَ".
Sayyiduna Zaid bin Thabit (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I bear witness that I heard the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) reciting: «اَلشَّيْخُ وَالشَّيْخَةُ إِذَا زَنَيَا فَارْجُمُوْهُمَا الْبَتَّةَ» (in some narrations, it is also: «نَكَالًا مِّنَ اللّٰهِ وَاللّٰهُ عَزِيْزٌ حَكِيْمٌ»).
Brief Explanation
(Commentary on Hadith 2359)
That is, when a man and a woman commit adultery, then stone both of them completely; this is their punishment from Allah Ta'ala. Allah Ta'ala is Mighty, Wise.
From this hadith, it is understood that there was such a verse which used to be recited, and its recitation has been abrogated, but the ruling remains and is established.
