Hadith 2361

Abdullah bin Buraidah narrated from his father, who said: I was sitting with the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) when a woman from the tribe of Banu Ghamid came to him and said: O Messenger of Allah! I have committed adultery and I wish that you purify me (from this sin). The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "Go back." The next day she came again and confessed to adultery before the Prophet (peace be upon him) and said: O Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him)! Purify me. Perhaps you are sending me back just as you sent Ma'iz back. By Allah, I am pregnant. Upon hearing this, the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: "Go back now, and when you have given birth, then come." So when she gave birth, she brought the child wrapped in a cloth and said: O Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him)! Here, I have given birth. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "Go and nurse him, and when he is weaned, then come." So when she had weaned the child, she brought him with a piece of bread in his hand and said: Look, O Messenger of Allah! Now I have weaned him. Upon this, the Prophet (peace be upon him) entrusted the child to a companion and ordered that a pit be dug for the woman. She was made to stand in it up to her chest and was ordered to be stoned. So she was made to stand in a pit up to her chest. Sayyiduna Khalid bin Walid (may Allah be pleased with him) came forward, picked up a stone, and threw it at her head, causing blood to spatter onto his face. He then spoke harsh words to the woman. When the Prophet (peace be upon him) heard this, he said: "Stop, O Khalid! Do not speak ill of her. By Him in whose hand is my soul, this woman has repented with such a mighty repentance that if a tax collector (who oppresses people and torments the poor) were to repent in this way, his sin would also be forgiven." (Although in another hadith, such a person will not enter Paradise.) Then the Prophet (peace be upon him) ordered that the funeral prayer be performed for her, and she was buried.

Brief Explanation
(Commentary on Hadith 2360)

From this hadith, the virtue of that pure-natured woman from the tribe of Ghamid is established: that, due to the demands of human nature, she committed a sin, repented, but her heart was not satisfied, so she came to the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam and said, “Purify me.” Not just once, but she came repeatedly, and in the end, she even placed a piece of bread in the hand of her small child so that the Mercy to the Worlds (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) could see, and then he ordered her to be stoned.

Subhan Allah! What courage she had, being a woman—what strong faith and fervor she possessed! Then, when Sayyiduna Khalid bin al-Walid radi Allahu anhu uttered some harsh words, the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam rebuked him and stated her virtue: that she had repented so sincerely that even if the greatest of oppressors were to repent in such a manner, he would be forgiven.

There is a narration that if her repentance were distributed among all the people of the world, it would suffice for them.

From this hadith, it is understood that in cases of adultery, theft, etc., even if repentance has been made, the prescribed punishment (hadd) will still be carried out.

Also, in this hadith, it is mentioned that the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam ordered that the funeral prayer (salat al-janazah) be performed for her, and then she was buried. From this, some scholars have said: the funeral prayer should be performed for the adulterer and adulteress.

Some have said: it is disliked (makruh) to perform the funeral prayer for one who has committed adultery.

The Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam performed her funeral prayer, and this appears to be correct: that both the common people and the elite should perform the funeral prayer for such a person.
