It is narrated from Sayyida Umm ‘Atiyyah (may Allah be pleased with her) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “A woman should not observe mourning for anyone who dies for more than three days, except for her husband, for whom she should mourn for four months and ten days. During this period, she should not wear colored clothes, except for a Yemeni cloak, nor apply kohl, nor use perfume, until she becomes pure from menstruation. When she has performed ghusl (ritual bath), she may apply kust and azfar (types of perfume) to the private area.”

Brief Explanation
(Explanation of Hadith 2322)
By «ثَوْبَعَصْبٍ» is meant the Yemeni cloth, which was colorful; a woman in mourning (during ‘iddah) could wear it. In «كست» and in some narrations «قسط» is mentioned; both have the same meaning, and it refers to a fragrant wood from which incense is taken. Most likely, it is the wood of oud, which used to be brought to Arabia from India; «اظفار» is a type of fragrance. Imam Nawawi rahimahullah has written that the concession for using this fragrance is for a woman who has performed the ritual bath (ghusl) after her menstrual period, so that the unpleasant odor may be removed; its use is not for the sake of fragrance. From this hadith, it is understood that a woman whose husband has passed away is prohibited during her waiting period (‘iddah) from wearing fine clothes, applying kohl, or using fragrance. She also cannot go outside the house, as will be mentioned ahead, and all this is due to many considerations of benefit. Islam has shown great gentleness towards women; in the time of ignorance (jahiliyyah), if a woman's husband died, she would be confined to a separate room, she would sweep away dung, throw it, and remain in filthy clothes in a very bad state for a whole year, as is mentioned in authentic ahadith. Therefore, a woman should act with patience and follow the commands of Islam, and in every situation, she should express gratitude to Allah.
