Brief Explanation
(Explanation of Hadiths 2319 to 2322) From these blessed hadiths, it is understood that it is forbidden (haram) to observe mourning (sawg) for any deceased person for more than three days, except for a woman, who shall remain in a state of mourning after her husband's death for four months and ten days. There are great wisdoms hidden in this: it demonstrates loyalty to the husband, the inheritance and other matters can be settled within this period, and the waiting period for the womb (istibra’ al-rahim) is also a wisdom.
From the aforementioned hadith, the permission to observe mourning is established, but this does not mean that the wife should weep, beat herself, or commit any kind of un-Islamic acts, such as cutting her hair, breaking bangles, screaming, or wailing—these are all un-Islamic acts. The meaning of observing mourning during the waiting period (‘iddah) is that the woman should not leave her husband's house, should not wear shiny or flashy clothes, should not wear jewelry, should not apply kohl (surma), should refrain from using perfume, and marriage during the days of ‘iddah is also prohibited, as will be detailed in the next chapter.
Furthermore, these hadiths also show that whoever observes mourning for more than three days does not have faith in Allah and the Last Day.
