Hadith 1972

Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: Permission was given for a menstruating woman to depart after performing the Tawaf al-Ifadah, and I had previously heard Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) say that a menstruating woman cannot depart. Then later I heard him say that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) had permitted menstruating women to depart without performing the Farewell Tawaf.

Brief Explanation
(Commentary on Hadiths 1970 to 1972)

According to most scholars, the Farewell Circumambulation (Tawaf al-Wada‘) during Hajj is obligatory (wajib), but there is a concession for women experiencing menstruation (hayd) or postnatal bleeding (nifas). In such a state, the Farewell Circumambulation is waived for them, and they may depart from Makkah, as mentioned in the aforementioned narrations.

Initially, Sayyiduna Ibn ‘Umar radi Allahu anhuma used to give the ruling that no one could leave Makkah without performing the Farewell Circumambulation, and even women experiencing menstruation or postnatal bleeding should wait until the bleeding stopped, and after attaining purity, perform the Farewell Circumambulation and then depart. However, when he learned of this hadith of the Noble Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, he immediately retracted his previous opinion. This demonstrates his devotion to the Sunnah, his adherence, and his obedience and submission. (radi Allahu anhu wa ardah).
