Hadith 1916

Sayyiduna Jubair bin Mut'im (may Allah be pleased with him) said: My camel was lost, so I went out searching for it and saw the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) standing with the people at Arafat. I said: By Allah, these are the Quraysh, so why are they here?

Brief Explanation
(Commentary on Hadith 1915)

Hums is derived from hamaasat, and the people of Quraysh were called Hums because they maintained strictness (hamaasat) in their religion. In the era of ignorance (Jahiliyyah), other people would perform wuquf (standing at Arafat), but the Quraysh would say that they are the family and dependents of Allah, so they would not go outside the Haram for wuquf. Our Prophet Muhammad (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) was also from the Quraysh, but he (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) and all the noble Companions (radi Allahu anhum) with him performed wuquf at Arafat without any distinction of Quraysh, and Arafat is outside the Haram. That is why the narrator was astonished that a member of the Quraysh, and on that day, in the plain of Arafat? They should have been within the boundaries of the Haram. (Raaz rahimahullah, with adaptation)

Wuquf of Arafah refers to supplication (du'a) and remembrance (adhkar), recitation of the Noble Qur'an, supplicating and conversing with Allah while standing and sitting, after performing the Zuhr and Asr prayers, and continuing to weep, implore, and seek forgiveness until evening. This is the very soul, essence, and foundation of the wuquf of Hajj. It was here that the completion of Islam was proclaimed, and the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) delivered the famous Farewell Sermon. At this blessed time and occasion, no matter how many supplications are made, they are few in comparison to its worth. Allah Ta'ala boasts to His servants who come from distant places, with disheveled hair, parched lips, and bare heads, weeping and imploring before Allah Ta'ala. May Allah Ta'ala grant everyone this supreme blessing, Ameen.

If this wuquf of the day of Arafah is missed by someone, then his Hajj is not valid. The Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said: «اَلْحَجُّ عَرَفَةٌ» "Hajj is (the day of) Arafah."

And Allah knows best.
