Brief Explanation
(Commentary on Hadith 1880)

Idtiba‘ is that the cloth of the ihram is taken out from under the right shoulder and placed over the left shoulder, leaving the right shoulder uncovered so that the arm is visible, and this was to display bravery and courage, but it became a Sunnah.

It should be noted that idtiba‘ is also only in the tawaf al-qudum and in the first three circuits.

Imam Darimi rahimahullah is perhaps also of this opinion, which is why he established a chapter: «الاضطباع فى الرمل» meaning the chapter of idtiba‘ along with ramal. Many people keep their right shoulder uncovered from the time of donning the ihram until completing the ‘umrah, to the extent that even at the time of prayer they do not cover the shoulder, so this action of theirs is against the Shari‘ah and also against the Sunnah. The Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said: «خُذُوْا عَنِّيْ مَنَاسِكَكُمْ» “Learn from me the rites of Hajj.”

Similarly, he said: «صَلُّوْا كَمَا رَأَيْتُمُوْنِيْ أُصَلِّيْ» “Pray as you have seen me praying.”
