Abdullah bin Abi Qatadah narrated that my father went out with the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) at the time of the Treaty of Hudaybiyyah (and went ahead to scout the enemy), his companions had entered into the state of Ihram, but Abu Qatadah (may Allah be pleased with him) had not entered into Ihram. He saw a wild donkey, hunted it with a spear, and ate its meat. He said: Then I submitted: O Messenger of Allah! I saw a wild donkey and hunted it by throwing a spear or an arrow at it. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said to the companions: "Eat," and all of them were in the state of Ihram.

Brief Explanation
(Commentary on Hadith 1863)
Hunting is prohibited in the state of ihram. Sayyiduna Abu Qatadah radi Allahu anhu had not assumed ihram, therefore the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam did not object to his hunting, and those who had already assumed ihram were told to eat its meat.
From this, it is understood that a person in the state of ihram (muhrim) cannot hunt, but he can eat the meat of an animal that has been hunted.
