Sayyiduna Abu Umamah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever is not prevented from performing Hajj by an apparent need, a tyrannical ruler, or a restraining illness, and dies without having performed Hajj, then let him die if he wishes as a Jew or if he wishes as a Christian."

Brief Explanation
(Commentary on Hadith 1823)
It is mentioned in Tirmidhi that whoever possesses provisions and a means of transport sufficient to take him to the House of Allah, yet does not perform Hajj, then Allah Almighty has no concern whether he dies as a Jew or a Christian. There is some criticism regarding the chain of narration of this hadith.
That is, whoever dies without having performed Hajj, it is as if he died as a Jew or a Christian.
In Hujjatullah al-Balighah, it is stated that the one who abandons Hajj has been likened to the Jews and Christians because the polytheists of Arabia used to perform Hajj, whereas the Jews and Christians did not.
