Hadith 1775

Sayyiduna Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him) said that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When a person is invited to a meal and he is fasting, he should say, 'I am fasting.'"

Brief Explanation
(Commentary on Hadith 1774)

It is better to conceal voluntary (nafl) acts of worship, but if someone is invited to eat and he is fasting, then he should inform (the host) that he is fasting so that the inviter does not feel hurt, because causing distress to a Muslim is a major sin. In fact, even after informing that he is fasting, if the host is still saddened by his not eating, then it is better that if it is a voluntary fast (nafl), he should break it and eat.
