Lady Umm Hani (may Allah be pleased with her) said: On the day of the conquest of Makkah, Lady Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her) came and sat on the left side of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and Lady Umm Hani (may Allah be pleased with her) was on the right side. She said: A slave girl brought a water vessel and presented it to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). He drank from it, then gave it to Lady Umm Hani (may Allah be pleased with her), and she also drank water from that vessel. Then she said: O Messenger of Allah! I was fasting, and now I have broken my fast? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Was it a make-up (qada) fast?" She replied: No. He said: "Then there is no harm, as it was a voluntary fast." Imam Darimi (may Allah have mercy on him) said: This is also my opinion (i.e., if a voluntary fast is broken, then there is no harm).

Brief Explanation
(Commentary on Hadith 1773)
«فَلَايَضُرُّكِ» means there is no sin. There has been a difference of opinion regarding whether, if a voluntary (nafl) fast is broken, its make-up (qada) is required or not. The correct view is that making up the fast is definitely necessary, because in another hadith it is stated: "Fast another day in its place." And Allah knows best.
