Hadith 1773

أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو النُّعْمَانِ، حَدَّثَنَا حَمَّادُ بْنُ سَلَمَةَ، عَنْ سِمَاكِ بْنِ حَرْبٍ، عَنْ هَارُونَ ابْنِ ابْنَةِ أُمِّ هَانِئٍ أَوْ ابْنِ ابْنِ أُمِّ هَانِئٍ، عَنْ أُمِّ هَانِئٍ، أَنّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ دَخَلَ عَلَيْهَا وَهِيَ صَائِمَةٌ، فَأُتِيَ بِإِنَاءٍ فَشَرِبَ ثُمَّ نَاوَلَهَا فَشَرِبَتْ، فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: "إِنْ كَانَ قَضَاءَ رَمَضَانَ، فَصُومِي يَوْمًا آخَرَ، وَإِنْ كَانَ تَطَوُّعًا، فَإِنْ شِئْتِ، فَاقْضِيهِ، وَإِنْ شِئْتِ، فَلَا تَقْضِيهِ".
It is narrated from Sayyida Umm Hani bint Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with her) that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came to her while she was fasting. A vessel of water was brought to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), from which he drank, then he gave the vessel to Sayyida Umm Hani (may Allah be pleased with her), and she also drank from it (then she said: I was fasting and I have broken my fast). The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "If this fast was a make-up for a Ramadan fast, then fast another day in its place, and if it was a voluntary fast, then if you wish, make it up, and if you do not wish, then do not make it up."

Brief Explanation
(Commentary on Hadith 1772)

From this hadith, it is understood that if a make-up (qada) fast is broken, then another fast must be observed in its place as its make-up. And if someone breaks a voluntary (nafl) fast, then he has the choice: if he wishes, he may fast in its place, and if he wishes, he may not. However, there is a difference of opinion among the scholars regarding this matter. The position of the Ahl al-Hadith and Imam Abu Hanifah rahimahullah is that if a voluntary fast is broken, its make-up should be observed. Imam Shafi‘i, Imam Ahmad, and Imam Ishaq rahimahumullah have said that it is not obligatory; making it up is recommended (mustahabb).
