حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو الْمُغِيرَةِ، حَدَّثَنَا الْأَوْزَاعِيُّ، عَنْ يَحْيَى، عَنْ أَبِي قِلَابَةَ، عَنْ أَبِي الْمُهَاجِرِ، عَنْ أَبِي أُمَيَّةَ الضَّمْرِيِّ، قَالَ: قَدِمْتُ عَلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ مِنْ سَفَرٍ فَسَلَّمْتُ عَلَيْهِ، فَلَمَّا ذَهَبْتُ لِأَخْرُجَ، قَالَ: "انْتَظِرْ الْغَدَاءَ يَا أَبَا أُمَيَّةَ". قَالَ: فَقُلْتُ: إِنِّي صَائِمٌ يَا نَبِيَّ اللَّهِ . فَقَالَ: "تَعَالَ أُخْبِرْكَ عَنْ الْمُسَافِرِ، إِنَّ اللَّهَ وَضَعَ عَنْهُ الصِّيَامَ، وَنِصْفَ الصَّلَاةِ" . قَالَ أَبُو مُحَمَّد: إِنْ شَاءَ، صَامَ، وَإِنْ شَاءَ، أَفْطَرَ.
Sayyiduna Abu Umayyah Dumari (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) from a journey. When I intended to return, he (peace be upon him) said: "O Abu Umayyah! Stay for the midday meal." I said: O Messenger of Allah! I am fasting. He said: "Come to me, I will tell you the ruling of fasting for a traveler. Allah Almighty has excused the traveler from fasting and half of the prayer." Imam Darimi (may Allah have mercy on him) said: If the traveler wishes, he may fast, and if he does not wish, he may not fast.
Brief Explanation
(Commentary on Hadith 1749)
In this hadith, for the traveler, the meaning of fasting and half the prayer is that if he is unable to observe the obligatory fast during travel, then he should make it up (qada) in residence, because the obligation is not waived. And by "half the prayer" is meant to shorten (qasr) the four-unit (rak‘ah) prayer to two units during travel.
