It is narrated from Sayyiduna Samurah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever performed ablution for Jumu'ah did well, and whoever performed ghusl, then (he did very well and) this is superior."

Brief Explanation
(Commentary on Hadith 1578)
The day of Jumu‘ah (Friday) is a day of great virtue. On this day, there is great merit in coming to the congregational mosque for the Jumu‘ah prayer after bathing (ghusl), performing ablution (wudu), applying oil and perfume, and arriving at the earliest time, «كماسيأتي».
The aforementioned ahadith pertain to bathing (ghusl) on the day of Jumu‘ah, in which it is narrated with great emphasis that whoever comes to the mosque for the Jumu‘ah prayer should perform ghusl.
The words of the hadith are «غسل يوم الجمعة واجب», but this is an obligation in the linguistic sense, not in the legal (shar‘i) sense. For this reason, the noble Companions (radi Allahu anhum) and the scholars of the Ummah have considered performing ghusl on the day of Jumu‘ah to be recommended (mustahabb).
