Hadith 157

Ubaid bin Jurayj said that one day in Makkah I was sitting with Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both), and another day I was sitting with Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both). I observed that Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both), in most matters, instead of giving a fatwa, would often say: «لاعلم لي» that I do not have knowledge about this.

Brief Explanation
(Commentary on Hadith 156)

From this hadith, the virtue of these two eminent Companions (radi Allahu anhuma) becomes evident. Furthermore, it shows that in matters of jurisprudence and issuing legal verdicts (fatwa), one should avoid haste or trying to prove that the person being questioned is very knowledgeable, as is established from the way of the pious predecessors (aslaf kiram). Saying “«لا علم لي»” or “«لا أعلم»” does not diminish anyone’s honor or status; rather, some of the predecessors have even called saying this as half of knowledge.
