Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: We performed sajdah (prostration) with the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in «إِذَاالسَّمَاءُانْشَقَّتْ» and «اقْرَأْبِاسْمِرَبِّكَ» (Surah Al-‘Alaq).

There are fifteen prostrations (sajdahs) in the Noble Qur’an. Imam Darimi rahimahullah has apparently mentioned only four surahs as a means of affirming the legitimacy of the prostration of recitation (sajdah at-tilawah), in which there is a prostration of recitation. This prostration is legislated (mashru‘) in every situation, whether during prayer or outside of prayer. Therefore, whenever the reciter comes across a verse of prostration, he should fall into prostration.
The method is that one says “Allahu Akbar,” performs the prostration, and recites the supplication (du‘a) for the prostration. Then, saying “Allahu Akbar,” he rises. Standing up, reciting the tashahhud, and saying the salam—none of these things are established from the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam.
The supplication for the prostration of recitation is: «اللّٰهُمَّلَكَسَجَدْتُوَبِكَآمَنْتُوَلَكَأَسْلَمْتُ ، خَشَعَلَكَسَمْعِيْ ، وَبَصَرِيْ ، وَمُخِّيْ ، وَعَظْمِيْ ، وَعَصَبِيْ ، سَجَدَوَجْهِيَلِلَّذِيْخَلَقَهُوَصَوَّرَهُوَشَقَّسَمْعَهُوَبَصَرَهُبِحَوْلِهِوَقُوَّتِهِ.». If this supplication is not memorized and only «سُبْحَانَرَبِّيَالْأَعْلَىٰ» is recited, that is sufficient. It should be clear that the prostration of recitation is not obligatory (wajib); for both the one who recites and the one who listens, it is sunnah, but it is not appropriate to abandon it.
