Hadith 1503

Abu Buraydah narrated, his father said: A Bedouin came to the service of the Prophet (peace be upon him) and said: O Messenger of Allah! Allow me to prostrate to you? The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: "If I were to order anyone to prostrate to another, I would have ordered a woman to prostrate to her husband."

Brief Explanation
(Commentary on Hadiths 1501 to 1503)

It is well known that the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) never ordered anyone to prostrate to himself or to anyone else. Rather, he (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) forbade prostration (sajdah) to other than Allah and invited to prostration before Allah alone. Therefore, it is clear that it is not permissible to bow or prostrate before anyone other than Allah—be it a prophet, a saint (wali), the sun or the moon, stone or tree. In fact, this is the very major shirk (shirk akbar) for the eradication of which the Prophet of Islam was sent.

Allah the Exalted says: « ﴿لَا تَسْجُدُوا لِلشَّمْسِ وَلَا لِلْقَمَرِ وَاسْجُدُوا لِلّٰهِ الَّذِي خَلَقَهُنَّ﴾ [حم السجده : 37]» “Do not prostrate to the sun or the moon, but prostrate to that Pure Being who created them.”

In another verse, it is said: «﴿أَلَمْ تَرَ أَنَّ اللّٰهَ يَسْجُدُ لَهُ مَنْ فِي السَّمَاوَاتِ وَمَنْ فِي الْأَرْضِ وَالشَّمْسُ وَالْقَمَرُ وَالنُّجُومُ وَالْجِبَالُ وَالشَّجَرُ وَالدَّوَابُّ وَكَثِيرٌ مِنَ النَّاسِ وَكَثِيرٌ حَقَّ عَلَيْهِ الْعَذَابُ ...﴾ [الحج : 18]» “Do you not see that all those who are in the heavens and all those who are on the earth, the sun, the moon, the stars, the mountains, the trees, the animals, and many among mankind prostrate to Allah, and many upon whom the punishment has become due...”, meaning the entire creation is in prostration before Allah, so why should man prostrate to those who themselves prostrate to Allah the Exalted?
