Hadith 1489

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When the Iqamah for prayer is called (i.e., the Takbir), then there is no prayer except the obligatory prayer." Imam Darimi (may Allah have mercy on him) said: If one is praying at home and the Iqamah is called in the mosque, then this is relatively easier.

Brief Explanation
(Commentary on Hadith 1488)

From these ahadith, it is established that when the congregational prayer (jama‘ah) has commenced, then one should not perform the sunnah prayers, rather one should join the congregation. This ruling is general and includes all sunnah prayers, even if they are the sunnahs of Fajr. Most scholars hold this view, and after the Fajr prayer, there is an option: if one wishes, one may perform the sunnah prayers at that time, or after the sun has risen. Those people who begin performing sunnah prayers even after the iqamah has been called are in clear opposition to the hadith of the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam); they should abandon this opposition, otherwise the outcome will be bad.
