Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) sent Sayyiduna Ali ibn Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) towards Makkah al-Mukarramah, I was with him. He announced four things until his voice became hoarse: Listen! Only a believing soul will enter Paradise. After this year, no polytheist shall perform Hajj, nor shall anyone circumambulate the House of Allah naked. And whoever has a treaty or pact with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), its duration is four months. After this period passes, Allah and His Messenger are free from obligation to the polytheists.

Brief Explanation
(Commentary on Hadith 1467)
Upon the revelation of Surah At-Tawbah, the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam first sent Sayyiduna Abu Bakr radi Allahu anhu to inform the disbelievers. Then, it occurred to the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam that, according to the custom of the Arabs, the right to annul a treaty belongs only to the one who made the treaty himself or to someone from his immediate household. Therefore, the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam dispatched Sayyiduna Ali radi Allahu anhu after him, and Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah radi Allahu anhu was with him. The last example of the Quraysh of Makkah’s breach of covenant was the Treaty of Hudaybiyyah. It had been agreed that on one side would be the Muslims and their allies, and on the other side the Quraysh and their allies. The tribe of Khuza‘ah joined with the Muslims, and Banu Bakr with the Quraysh. The fundamental condition of the treaty was that both parties would live in peace and security for ten years. However, not even two years had passed when Banu Bakr attacked Khuza‘ah, and the Quraysh aided them. Banu Khuza‘ah sought sanctuary in the Ka‘bah in the name of Allah, yet they were mercilessly killed. Only forty people managed to escape to Madinah and related the entire distressing incident to the Prophet of Islam sallallahu alayhi wa sallam. Now, according to the terms of the treaty, it became necessary for the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam to punish the Quraysh for their breach of covenant. Thus, the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam set out with ten thousand Muslims, and without any bloodshed, Makkah was conquered in the 8th year of Hijrah.
After this, in the 9th year of Hijrah, the first ten verses of this noble Surah were revealed, and the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam first sent Sayyiduna Abu Bakr radi Allahu anhu as the leader of the Hajj for the Muslims. Then, later, Sayyiduna Ali radi Allahu anhu was sent to Makkah so that he could publicly proclaim these verses of Surah At-Tawbah and make a clear and decisive announcement regarding the aforementioned four matters.
