Sayyiduna Abu Dharr Ghifari (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Allah Almighty remains attentive to the servant as long as he does not turn here and there; when the worshipper turns his face away, Allah Almighty also turns away from him."

Brief Explanation
(Commentary on Hadith 1460)
From this hadith, turning one’s attention here and there and looking around during prayer is prohibited.
There are two types of turning (iltafat):
Turning the gaze and looking here and there—according to the light of the ahadith, there is allowance for this, and even this should not occur in obligatory (fard) prayer if possible, as it is better to avoid it. As for turning the neck and looking around, this is prohibited, because in prayer a person should remain focused and keep his gaze towards the place of prostration (sajdah), so that his attention does not become distracted and the humility and submissiveness (khushu‘ and khudu‘) that are extremely necessary for prayer remain intact.
