Hadith 1409

Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) said that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "No person should pray in a single garment in such a way that nothing from it is on his shoulders."

Brief Explanation
(Commentary on Hadith 1408)

From these ahadith, it is established that if there is only one garment but it is long and wide, then one should drape it over the shoulders so that the shoulders are covered and the private parts (awrah) are also concealed, and then perform the prayer; his prayer will be valid.

And if the garment is small and cannot cover the private parts, then he should tie it around his waist like a lungi (waist-wrapper) and perform the prayer; his prayer will also be valid. This is in the case when there is only one garment. In the blessed era of the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam), there was poverty, and not everyone even had two garments.

Today, Allah Ta’ala has granted everyone abundance, so prayer should be performed wearing (proper) clothes.

31]» “O children of Adam! Take your adornment at every place of prostration.”
