Hadith 1405

Jabir bin Yazid bin Aswad narrates from his father (Sayyiduna Yazid, may Allah be pleased with him) that he performed the Fajr prayer with the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him). During the prayer of the Prophet (peace be upon him), two men remained seated in a corner and did not pray. Sayyiduna Yazid (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) called them, and they were brought while they were trembling. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "What prevented you from praying?" Both replied: "We had already prayed at our places." He said: "Do not sit like this in the future. When you have prayed at home and then find the Imam leading the prayer, then pray with the Imam, and that (prayer at home) will be counted as a voluntary prayer for you." Sayyiduna Yazid (may Allah be pleased with him) said: After that, people would get up, take hold of the hand of the Prophet (peace be upon him), and then wipe it over their faces. Sayyiduna Yazid (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I also took hold of the blessed hand of the Prophet (peace be upon him) and wiped it over my face, and it was colder than ice and more fragrant than musk.

Brief Explanation
(Commentary on Hadith 1404)

From this hadith, the importance of performing prayer in congregation is understood. Furthermore, if one has already performed the prayer and then finds the congregation standing, one should not abandon the congregation but rather perform the prayer with the congregation as well. In such a case, the earlier prayer performed at home, in a building, shop, or tent will be considered voluntary (nafl), and the prayer performed with the congregation will be counted as the obligatory (fard) prayer, as is explicitly mentioned in Abu Dawud. However, the narration in Abu Dawud is weak. For this reason, Imam Shafi‘i rahimahullah and others have said: the first prayer performed alone will be counted as the obligatory (fard) prayer, and the second prayer performed with the congregation will be considered voluntary (nafl).

At the end of this narration, there is mention of seeking blessing (tabarruk) from the noble hand of the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, which is the statement of the narrator himself, and this mention is not found in the aforementioned sources.

Secondly, this matter was specific to the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam. In the present era, it is not correct to kiss the hand of the imam, or to place it on the head, or to wipe it over the face.

His Eminence, the Grand Mufti of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, also used to prohibit this. He said that one may kiss the hand and forehead of one's parents.

Here, King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz has also issued the same ruling; if anyone wished to kiss his hand, he would withdraw his hand.
